The Pieve di Romena, located near Romena Castle, is one of the largest parish churches in the Casentino.
We know the year it was built from an inscription on the first column on the left, where the year 1152 is carved.
Its interior, both austere and evocative, gives the feeling of a past so near that one can almost reach out and touch it.
The structure is divided into a nave and two aisles by Romanesque columns with elaborate capitals that are unique in the history of art. Some scholars hypothesise they were produced by local labourers who also decorated other parish churches in the Casentino, with contributions from Lombard art. Others believe the artists came from outside.
The building is striking for the charm and workmanship of the symbolic figures sculpted on the grey stone.

La pieve di San Pietro a Romena è un edificio sacro che si trova ai piedi del castello di Romena nel comune di Pratovecchio.
L'attuale pieve di romena è stata costruita alla metà del XII secolo sopra ad una precedente chiesa triabsidata risalente al VIII secolo di cui sono visibili i resti sotto al presbiterio.
Sconvolta da una frana provocata dallo smottamento del terreno causato da un sottostante fossatello nel 1678 che la privò delle prime due campate e da un successivo terremoto del 1729 che le provocò altri gravi danni alla facciata, all'abside che venne spaccata da una profonda fenditura e nel campanile che da allora è rimasto sbassato, oggi dopo numerosi restauri appare come una dei più interessanti edifici romanici del Casentino.
