Sunset, the sea salt of Trapani and Favignana island

Along the western coast of Sicily, between Trapani and Marsala, you can find the most important salt pans of Europe for the quality and plenty of the product.
The remarkable importance of trapanese sea pans is due to the elevated concentration of salt in the Mediterranean waters and to the climatologic conditions.
The sea pans take up a great extension of land limited by dams close the sea and constituted from a great number of basins.
We can part the basins in two groups: in the first one the sea-water, seeped into the basin with the high tide, is clarified and concentrated until becoming saturated of sodium chloride; in the second the salt is separated and deposited thanks to the evaporation in room temperature.
The basins have got several shapes, trimmed from banks of stone of Favignana island and communicating each other by channels and "shutters". Their bottom is made smooth and impermeable with clay, sand and chalk in order to avoid marine water dispersions and infiltrations.

Is a good place to take picture in the moorning and at sunset.

Un saluto speciale agli amici di TE che vivono qui in Sicilia e ai tanti altri che amano questa terra...
