The Pantheon was built by order of the consul Agrippa, son of Emperor Augustus in 27 BC It was a temple to all gods (pan meaning all, and theos, god). After several fires, which almost ruined him, was entirely rebuilt from the ground by the Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 128 AD Hadrian ordered to be written on the pediment of the portico of the facade inscription:

M.AGRIPPA L: F: COS TERTIVM FECIT ("Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, Consul for the third time, (it) built")

The new building was saved from destruction in the early Middle Ages, because in 608 the Byzantine Emperor Phocas gave it to Pope Boniface IV, who transformed it into a Christian church (St. Mary of the Martyrs). It is the first case of a pagan temple converted to Christian worship. For this reason was the only building of ancient Rome which remained intact and in continuous use until today, and for this reason also has been able to this day as the best preserved structure of antiquity.

El Panteón de Roma, una de las obras maestras más impresionantes de la arquitectura de todos los tiempos, no tiene tanta fama como el Coliseo o los Foros Romanos, pero verlo por primera vez es tanto o más impactante.

Escondido entre las calles estrechas del barrio de Trevi, muy cerca de la plaza Navona, aparece de repente, sin avisar. Es un espectro, un edificio que allá por el año 128 d.C. ya estaba plantado ahí, seguramente tan imperturbable como ahora. Impresiona sólo pensar lo que ha visto pasar delante de su pórtico, durante casi mil novecientos años. Lo de espectro no es exageración, se nota su antigüedad, se nota muchísimo, parece como si estuviera ya en tránsito hacia el otro mundo… Su aspecto ténue y fantasmal contrasta fuertemente con los edificios y la vida de su alrededor. Y sin embargo, está prácticamente intacto.

El Panteón fue construido por mandato del cónsul Agripa, yerno del emperador Augusto, en el año 27 a.C. Era un templo dedicado a todos los dioses (pan quiere decir todo y theos, dios). Después de varios incendios, que prácticamente lo arruinaron, fue reconstruido enteramente desde los cimientos por el emperador Adriano entre los años 118 y 128 d.C. Adriano mandó escribir en el frontón del pórtico de la fachada principal la siguiente inscripción:

M.AGRIPPA L:F: COS TERTIVM FECIT
(“Marco Agrippa, hijo de Lucio, cónsul por tercera vez, (lo) construyó”)

Esta es la inscripción que puede leerse hoy día en el friso del pórtico de entrada, y se debe a que Adriano nunca quiso firmar sus obras, aunque la reconstrucción desde cero y con importantes cambios al diseño original corriera de su cuenta.

El edificio se salvó de nuevo de la destrucción a principios de la Edad Media, porque ya en 608 el emperador bizantino Focas lo donó al papa Bonifacio IV, que lo transformó en iglesia cristiana (Santa María de los Mártires). Es el primer caso de un templo pagano convertido al culto cristiano. Por esta razón fue el único edificio de la Antigua Roma que permaneció intacto y en uso ininterrumpido hasta hoy, y es por esta razón también que ha podido llegar hasta nuestros días como la estructura mejor conservada de la Antigüedad.

Por eso el conjunto tiene una planta circular cerrada por una cúpula. Tanto la altura del espacio interior de la cúpula como el diámetro de la pared circular de la planta es de 43,20 m, lo que la convierte en la mayor cúpula de fábrica de la historia. La cúpula de la Basílica de San Pedro fue construida un poco más pequeña por respeto a ésta.
