Where today is the medieval abbey of San Clemente a Casauria. the ancient town of Interpromium rose along the Via Claudia Valeria.
Originally it occupied an island of about 40 hectares comprised within two branches of the Aterno which was accessed via ancient bridges mentioned in medieval chronicles.
Excavations have brought to light a large necropolis. Remains of buildings are scattered all around the church of San Clemente a Casauria, in whose antiquarium a number of inscriptions and reliefs are collected.
Among the finds brought back to light, there is an enigmatic fascinating stone sculpture in Majella stone which, according to some scholars, depicts a Madonna with Child, without a head, while, according to others, it is a child Hercules, son of Zeus and Alcmena strangling with one hand one of the snakes sent by Juno to take revenge for Jupiter's infidelity.
