Pupaggi Castle - Sellano (PG)
It rises on a plateau on the eastern side of the Via della Spina, in correspondence with the watershed between the territory of the Menotre and the Valle Umbra with the south-eastern one of the Valnerina, of which it is a morphologically and historically part. The Via della Spina was the trans-Apennine connection that had primary importance, before the construction of the Via Flaminia in the 2nd century BC. This street was a spectator, among other things, of the passage of Hannibal's troops during the Second Punic War.
The inhabited area of Pupaggi developed during the fourteenth century as a villa built on the plateau of the same name around a pre-existing medieval nucleus, consisting of the church of San Sebastiano and a dovecote tower, probably dating back to the previous century.
In 1611 there were 125 inhabitants, reduced to 72 in 1713, today (2021) about 50 people live there permanently.
The houses expand around a large central clearing, which overlooks the public wash house, the Church of San Sebastiano and a building divided into several buildings, including the dovecote tower leaning against an arch. The tower has the particularity of being equipped, at the corners, with overturned terracotta vases with the function of preventing predatory animals from climbing up to the pigeon house.
The presence of some architectural elements suggests that the building, now used for hospitality activities, corresponds to the ancient fortified nucleus of the town.
Downstream from the built-up area are the remains of the Church of the Madonna della Ginestra.
The Pupaggi area, due to its natural beauty, is part of a Site of Community Interest.
Curiosity
According to legend, the name of Pupaggi was born in memory of the noble and beautiful Pupa, a young local girl. The woman was so beautiful that the noble feudal lords of the neighboring areas waged bloody struggles to conquer her. However, the Lady's true love was hidden from the inhabitants inside the highest tower, so as to protect their love story forever. The bloody clashes are still told between myth and legend, by the old shepherds of the place.

Hi Silvio,
Les arbres cadrent bien le village. La prise de vue permet de voir les d閠ails des maisons et de l'間lise. La lumi鑢e fait ressortir les couleurs. Bonne journ閑.

Hello Silvio,
Nice villages situated among the trees and sloping fields. The foreground shows that autumn has arrived to Italy too. The colours are beautiful and there is a pleasant light under the slightly cloudy sky.
Best regards,

Ciao Caro Silvio,
Your area has an amazing number of beautiful old churches and impressive, derelict castles!
The autumnal trees make a beautifully textured surround to the pale coloured buildings as they rise noticeably above the tree canopy.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Silvio
Awesome early autumnal colours all leads to the standout medieval castle complex peacefully nestled amidst the thick foliage. A shot very much helped by sublime light and perfectly detailed to its best. Congrats
Best regards

Hello Silvio,
Pretty countryside around this tiny settlement. I wonder if there are any vacant houses to move into.
