Barattano Castle

In the Gualdese castles system, it is the most marked archetype. It was built in the 13th century. with the name of Villa S. Angelo in Piscina. It is said that the current name was given "for the quality of the fraudulent people who lived there". Surrounded by mighty walls (dated 1452) with central keep and high defense towers, some raised, it represents a valid example of compact military architecture devoted to purely defensive purposes.

In 1261 Filippo di Barattano was captain of the people in Todi during the podestaria of Filippo degli Ugoni from Brescia, in 1540 the castle sent a worker to Perugia for the construction of the Rocca Paolina. The castle remained for centuries under the influence of Todi: in 1802 it was united to Gualdo Cattaneo, in 1815 to S. Terenziano, and then in 1861 again to Gualdo Cattaneo.

Currently in fair condition, it is fascinating for its structural morphology characterized by a large wall with a medieval entrance door, characteristic alleys and high towers, some of which have remains of roofing. Inside there is the church of S. Bartolomeo (13th century) with 16th and 17th century frescoes, and two 16th century wooden angels.
