Polyptych
Work by Niccol di Liberatore known as the Alunno, it was painted in 1471 for the main altar of the local church of San Francesco. In the eighteenth century, probably after the earthquake of 1751, it was moved to a chapel in the same church and deprived, due to lack of space, of the order of arches placed between the predella and the upper part. On the occasion of the restorations carried out in 1928, this series of arches was rebuilt in imitation of the similar polyptych of the Pupil preserved in the Nocera Umbra picture gallery. It is among the most beautiful works of the famous painter.
It consists of a penttych with a gold background, divided into fifteen paintings, beyond the predella, with about sixty figures, 3.10 meters wide and 5.50 meters high, the frames are filled with rich gilded carvings.
In the center is the Virgin seated on the throne, with the Child naked and standing on her knees, in the act of receiving a basket of cherries from an Angel: with the right she takes some, with the left she brings some to her lips, turning her gaze to the mother, as if asking permission to eat them. Fifteen angels form a crown, some with musical instruments.
On the step of the throne it is written: NICOLAUS FULGINAS PINXIT MCCCCLXXI.
