Jesse tree
Tempera on wood; 218 x 128 cm. It comes from the altar of the Immaculate Conception of the local church of Santa Maria (seat of the Confraternity of Recommended). Work of Matteo da Gualdo.
Overall it is in good condition; the original frame is lost.
In the painting, the tree has its roots in the body of a gigantic Adam, lying down and as if held on the ground by a belt made up of two branches, one of which is bristling with thorns (symbols of sin). The ancestors of Christ are not arranged in chronological sequence within the circles formed by the racemes, but by placing the fourteen kings of Israel in the higher order, in the middle one the precursors of David (with Abraham and Isaac in the central circle), in the lower one those who lived after the Babylonian exile. On the top of the trunk, under the apparition of the Eternal in a glory of cherubs and among the largest racemes that frame the busts of Joachim and Anna, stands the Virgin, with the robe quilted with stars and solar rays that create like a "almond" of light around her subtle body.
All the characters enclosed in the circles formed by the racemes of the shrub are identified by writing on scrolls.
