House with dovecote tower - Madonna di Lugo - Spoleto (PG)

The plain that goes from Madonna di Lugo to Azzano is characterized by the great concentration of dovecote towers, one of the densest places in Italy. The breeding of pigeons, in addition to procuring precious food proteins, allowed a large availability of pigeon guano, a valuable fertilizer: "Merchants go to Azzano more than any other place to prove it, while that People are usually stabbing Canapines with Palombino, and here I am pleased to recall what I said in the Annotation of Chap. 1. that our Ancestors had not built so many Divers for our Campaign to eat the Pigeons, but to have the pen, and especially for the Canapines. " .
The area was, in fact, famous for the cultivation of Hemp, as Ancaiani always remembers: "in the aforementioned Places of Azzano, and Beroide, more Hemp is harvested than in all the rest of the Places in our Territory"; cultivation was facilitated not only by the availability of low-cost fertilizer, but also by the rich presence of water.
