Castagnola - Giano dell扷mbria (PG)
The village of Castagnola, immersed in an uncontaminated landscape, not far from the splendid Abbey of San Felice, was one of the castles of the so-called Normannia. Its history, like that of the other castrums in the area, is linked to the events of the Municipality of Giano, with which it often interweaves non-peaceful relations. It was disputed by the cities of Foligno, Spoleto and Todi; in the fourteenth century. it was part of the Signoria dei Trinci and in the sixteenth century. it passed under the dominion of Todi: as evidenced by the coat of arms, walled up on the main door, depicting an eagle with two eagles under the wings, a symbol of Todi's dominion. The etymology of the name, somewhat curious, has given rise to various hypotheses; it probably refers to the structure of the village which recalls that of a chestnut. In medieval times the castle was divided into 3 districts, and was governed by a Podest� who remained in office for 6 months and carried out various tasks. The life and administration of the Municipality was regulated by a real Statute, drawn up in 1486 in Latin and then translated into vernacular in 1600. The visit to the castle begins by crossing the ancient door in local stone on which the eagle of Todi; tiny alleys and medieval houses enclosed within the ancient walls, allow you to take a trip back in time. The only sacred building that we find within the walls is the church of Santa Croce located at the beginning of the village; probably of ancient origins, it shows the typical ashlar structure on the outside, unfortunately it was remodeled inside in 1700. Following the tour of the walls you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding hills and the Martani Mountains; among olive trees, secular oaks and cypresses you can also see the imposing and severe Abbey of San Felice.

It's a fine tower and the building generally seems to be in a good shape. I like the composition where the street disappears behind the bend, teasing my curiosity. You managed the exposure well and the light is nicely reflected in the stones of the pavement.

Streets or alleys that run under an arch always attract my attention. Likewise here, while there is also a beautiful tower next to the arch.
