Church of San Valentino - San Valentino - Scheggino (PG)rnThe Church of San Valentino stands in a small open space on the top of the castle of the same name, in a dominant position over the Valley of the Nera River. The Romanesque building, dedicated to the holy bishop of Terni known for being the protector of lovers, was built around the end of the 12th century.rnThe fresco in the upper register of the back wall, the work of a local painter from Valnerina dated 1474, represents the Crucifix with Saint Lucia on the left, unusually depicted with the candle in her hand, rather than with her eyes in the cup, San Felice and the Madonna Addolorata, on the right San Giovanni, San Valentino and Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, whose names are written in Gothic letters in the band below.rnIn the lower register, on the left, is St. Valentine, dated 1544, the work of a follower of Spain, in the center is a modest fresco of the Madonna and Child between two Angels who raise a curtain, a naive but pleasant work of a mediocre painter close to the Baroque, dated 1560, on the right a San Biagio almost completely disappeared.

Hello Silvio,
Looking closely at these paintings, before reading the note, I thought the upper ones looked considerably older than those below. I was pleased to learn that I was right. ;-) None of these artists were among the greatest of their generations, but the older fresco is considerably better than the paintings below. The light was quite good and you handled it well.

Very impressive ancient painting. You are so good in finding these beauties. I see many parts are gone but at least luckily the central part is better preserved. It is pity there is not more light here but I suppose it also helps with the preservation of colors.

most of the old mural was preserved, despite we can see one of the scenes was lost. a marvelous piece of ancient art. looks like the bishop is better done than the other personages.
