Mask with globe - Sacro Bosco - Bomarzo (VT)

The Sacro Bosco, better known as the Park of Monsters for the presence of grotesque sculptures scattered in a surreal landscape, is the oldest sculpture park in the modern world.
It was designed by the architect Pirro Ligorio, famous for completing St. Peter's after Michelangelo's death, commissioned by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, known as Vicino.
Orsini had the park "Sol to vent the heart" built and dedicated it to the memory of his beloved wife, Giulia Farnese, not to be confused with the more famous and dissolute concubine of Pope Alexander VI Borgia of the same name.
The mask with the globe that, alone, marks the limits of the Grove, is the first Monster of the Park that you meet from the current entrance. The Bredekamp connects it to the masks of the pre-Columbian divinities that Vicino must have seen in the collections of noblemen, such as Cosimo I de 'Medici. According to other interpretations, the immense anthropomorphic mask with its mouth wide open, which seems to emerge directly from the bowels of the Earth, surmounted by a large stone globe, on top of which a small tower is placed, could be identified as Proteus or Glaucus.
