Ancaiano Castle - Spoleto (PG)

Few people know it, but the Municipality of Spoleto is part of the Valnerina, three of its hamlets, Le Cese, Belvedere and Ancaiano, overlook the splendid Nera valley, in an environment of incomparable beauty.
Of the three, now almost depopulated, hamlets, the richest in history is Ancaiano, ancestral castle of the noble Ancaiani family, built to defend the south side of the ancient duchy and dominated by a mighty tower with massive architecture, with a complex decoration with white stone barbicans. Also at the end, on the lookout terrace, a small room characterizes the whole building.
From the tower the walls descend to the inhabited area, characterized by the high square keep, with the typical triangular structure of the sloping castle.
The fortress was built, probably in the 11th century by the Ancaiani nobles, lords of the castle and the surrounding lands as well as the nearby abbey of San Pietro in Valle, of which they were always commendatory abbots.

Hello Silvio,
It's a fine fortress kept in good condition. I like its plain style and the low angle makes it look quite impressive. The wall reminds me of a face, with two surprised eyes at the top, a balcony nose lower down and a big gaping mouth surrounded by a green beard. It has all been captured with very good light.

A close upwards POV upon the castle, well made photo, Silvio.
We can clearly see each beick on the walls, the elegant top and the climber plant that added green tone to the sight.

Hello Silvio, Gert is right, this tower looks like a face. The illusion of seeing a facial structure in an everyday object is called pareidolia. Lovely simple tower covered with ivy. Great colours and sharpness.

What a great light which well emphasized the texture of the tower. You have well selected that angle from the close perspective this straight towe gets some eye catching distortion and looks more interesting. The openings in the tower look a bit like eye and mouth of a face. The blue sky is perfect as a background,
