National Archaeological Museum, a photo from Skopje, West

Photographer's Note

The National Archaeological Museum and other buildings around Skopje are only lit in these national yellow and red colors of the Macedonian FYR flag for just one day a year. 8 December 2015 was St. Clement of Ohrid Day, a national holiday. The statues are of the boatmen (Гемиџиите) of Thessaloniki, a national terrorist group who sought independence from their Ottoman overlords through bombings in Salonika in 1903. A well conceived nocturnal composition creating an interesting juxtaposition between the monument and the lovely background architecture. Well exposed with pleasing warm/cool tonal contrasts. I like the repeating columns and the play of light along the river.

Great composition and fine light balance in this night shot. The ensemble of statues is quite original, they all seem absorbed in their own world, including one reading a book. I don't know who he is, but my guess is he'd be my favourite member of the ensemble.

Hello Chris,
I don't quite remember this from 2009. Maybe the statues are new, or maybe it's just the illuminations and the surrounding darkness. But so much has changed in Skopje during the past few years anyway. It is a good composition in any case with a good balance across the water and well managed light.

La distance entre les deux rives cr閑 de la profondeur. L'utilisation probable d'un support et d'une vitesse lente d'exposition permet de voir les d閠ails du monument et du mus閑 national de l'arch閛logie. Cela a aussi un effet sp閏ial sur les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journ閑.

Skopje was much year ago hit by an earthquake, and part reparation through Belgian people
Nice sharp and clear photographed.
A nice view about the area, with the statue and columns in background.
Also nice depth and perspective.

Combined strong illumination and dark night, well rendered this scene, Chris.

A beautiful night shot of the center of Skopje. Before you have shown us already quite monumental photographs of this relatively unknown capital.
Beautiful illumination of the museum and other buildings.
Nicely composed with the statue of terrorists ... ? Hmm. I guess in Macedonia they will be considered as freedom fighters.

Hello Chris, a night time shot that can only be viewed annually. Clever, the way that the pillars are lit in this way.
A good point of view with the statues in the fg, so there is something of interest in every part of the scene.

is it just me or does this look more like a painting haha.
especially in the bg portions of the scene. all in all, its the choice of set up and composition that makes it work. smartly placed on the right, balanced by the bg left. funky lighting and color give it personality. cheers
