Skopje Kale, a photo from Skopje, West

Photographer's Note

A view from the Kale Castle looking across the Vardar river towards the Skopje city centre. 'Kale' is the Turkish word for fortress and is still in common usage despite the Ottomans leaving over a century ago. Remains of Neolithic settlements have been found on this hill dating back to 4,000 BC.

The remains of the Roman town of Skupi destroyed in a 6th century earthquake can be seen here:

The rubble from Skupi was used in the construction of the Fortress.

Hello Chris,
I can't recall seeing this view very often. It shows us perfectly the stunning difference between the part of Skopje that survived the 1963 earthquake and the rather horrendous city that was built in later decades. I was quite satisfied when coincidences brought me a room in the Albanian-Muslim area. It's a very interesting composition with the red brick roofs in the foreground as fine eye-catchers.

Wonderfully combined view of the ancient castle-tower and modern urban view on the far side across the river, Chris.
Managed well with the bright daylight that brought out fine sight of objects on the scene.

Hello Chris,
A great view of the city. I like the vertical composition which includes both the older tower in the foreground and the more modern ones in the distance with the river in the middle. The light was fine also.

Sensational POV in this composition, which gives us a wide view of the city, great contrast with this tower in the foreground, the river and the modern city in the background, it looks very new, but I remember that it had a terrible earthquake many years ago .

What a contrast!
The f/g shows the old part of the city and the b/g the more modern aspects.
Now ... which do I like better!
After one full second of deliberation, my vote is for the old part!

I liked the contrast between the tower of the castle and the towers of apartments ahead. excellent use of elements.the castle is so well rebuilt that looks fake.
