Three wise men, a photo from Budva, South

Photographer's Note

On January 6th, Western Christianity celebrates Epiphany known also as the Three King抯 Day. Tradition mentions three kings or three wise men visiting recently born Jesus. I have seen recently a cartoon showing two ladies talking about Christmas, one of them said 揑 can believe the virgin having a child but can you imagine three wise men???�

In any case you have probably realized that this mosaic does not present the tree wise men but three angels visiting Abraham with a promise that he will soon have the promised child (Genesis 18:1-8). These three angels are by the Christian tradition interpreted as the Holy Trinity. Trinity visiting Abraham is a very popular theme on the Orthodox icons. The most famous Trinity icon was painted by Andrei Rublev in the 15th century. You can admire it in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. This simplified but still beautiful version decorates the entrance to the Orthodox church of Holy Trinity in Budva.

nice the view of this section of the church with the three angel to dominating the image.Here in Greece celebrate on Jan 6th,Epiphany with the more interesting custom,the priests to through the cross in the sea and brave men,in the middle of Winter,to swim and making dives to bringing back,blessed from the priest.

Hi Mariusz,

Ha ha ha about the 3 wise men joke! And yes one of the first things I noticed was that they are not men but angels with wings. I spent a few days in Budva but missed this church. A magnificent tiled religious artwork. Tfs!

Fajna uwaga tych pań z komiksu. Rzeczywiście, trzech mądrych mężczyzn? :)
Ciekawe, że czasem to są trzej kr髄owie, czasem mędrcy ze Wschodu. A co jest naprawdę w relikwiarzu w Kolonii? Jak szczątki tych kr髄體 razem zebrali? Wybrałeś ładną mozaikę na dzień Trzech Kr髄i. Yes, we call it Befana in Italian. And I think the next day is Orthodox Christmas. So the icons in your photo are perfectly suited to the occasion. I love the rich colours and the use of gold in the iconography. A beautiful close up, sharp. well lit and perfectly saturated.
