Photographer's Note

My grandfather was very afraid to die.
Yesterday, on Valentine, a day of love,
he told my father he was tired,
my father told him to sleep, that all was well.

I wasn't there, I couldn't have been. I live in Latvia, he lived in Holland. When I moved here, I knew the chance of saying goodbye to him on the right moment was very small.

My grandfather loved flying. He witnessed the famous flight of Antony Fokker in Haarlem in the Netherlands, he worked for Fokker when he was young, and if you ever see a Fokker IIV, the chance is big that he had made the wings. He saw Schiphol grow from a grassfield to the place it is today. We went there a lot, and we looked at planes, and talk about the places they would fly to.
He traveled around the world to his brother in Australia several times. First by boat and later by plane (first trip took 5 days). He didn't speak a word english.

He inspired me to travel. He took me to the Frankfurt Autoshow in 1973, I was just 8. We went by plane for one day!

His name was Nelis van Beem, he was 97 and he was a good, good person.
I am thankfull for all his love,
and I will miss him a lot.

All is well . . .

The crises of te 30's made my grandfatgher work at Fokker, making planes. I now work in the same area, also because of the crises. I travel a lot now, fly very often.

I have noticed I had forgotten about him lately . . . until I saw this photo. I still love him, I have my own family now, I hope he is with us :)
