Photographer's Note
Almost at the same time that Curtis was uploading his Invasion of Privacy, I was out in the city center taking pictures of that colourful Summer carnival, putting my new camera and lenses at work.
I got bolder and bolder in photographing portraits, so I thought I'd set myself a sort of theme, and I started taking pictures of people with their cell phones. I already decided then, that I'd rather make one frame with a couple of shots, than creating a theme.
I can understand that cell phones can sometimes be very easy. (When I was renovating my house in Rotterdam, I needed one, too, but have seldom used it since then. I don't want to be reached every where I am))
I spend quite a lot of time in trains and other public transport, the most often heard sentence is: 'in the train', and usually the conversation is so loud, that it disturbes every other person.
I think this is my revenge for all the disturbances because of those cell phones.
I have added grain, (it seems a hype as well as the cell phones, BTW), because I think it gives them a more detatched appearance, I also desaturated a bit. Both PP actions are new to me, but I have observed it with some other people, and I really think this would work well here.
Burnt the background sometimes, and added a frame.

I was supprised, according to the face of the people, their look and style, I would say this is Los Angeles and not Holland ;)
Interesting picture :)

revenche can be sweet Rinie... very nice composition... and yes cellphones are a pian in the ass when used as megaphones to annoy people... but as far as busines goes their very handy and useful in my opinion ;D...

such a true depiction of reality in urban ares, Rinie!
Like you, i don´t want to be found for everyone whenever they want to talk to me. For me, this is a tool for surveillace and i don´t like the feeling at all!
as for your picture, i like a lot the combination desaturate a bit + add grains. it worked quite well here. looks journalistic and stylish.
great stuff! Excellent.

Nice montage, Rinie, and a good way to graphically represent how annoyingly ubiquitous cellphones have become by now. The grain works great, and the single photo I like most is the upper left one, for the sheer charm of the way in which the little one poses, and for the way in which father and son are facing the same direction. Well done.

Good stuff Rinie, and now you´re just showing of, that many portraits at once is pure bragging ;o) I like themall individually esp the woman looking at you, but as a theme they look great!

like Line (so surprised to see her comment now :) I am only not sure of the one that looks at us..she makes it a little ad like..but I liked your hip grains very much of course..and your note is true true true..(I am a slave that has to be with it all day long)..
thanks..

Lots of comments already (understandably), so I'll just say that I'm impressed that you caught eight portraits that have such a uniform appearance in colours, composition etc, maybe it's down to postprocessing but still very nice work.

I created a personal theme about mobile phone, you can have a look if you want. As for your realisation, it is quite a success. Well done !!!

Excellent capture of the world of Cell Phones. All kinds of faces here. It's a great collage here. Your post processing also worked nicely. There are so many stories that can be made from these photos. Many lives linked by this commonality. Very nicely done.

This is delightful Rinie! You've taken the subject and made it you own with this montage of images, each well done. I applaud your venturing into the increasingly popular post processing technique, though it is a bit of a shame to use a camera that cost this much simply to produce sharp images, and then blur them with noise... ;-) I think this whole movement is being driven by folks shooting with Holgas that leak light all over the place. Right Torben?
The images are all so candid and distinctive and you present them well. Excellent, creative work.

Great idea and work-out, Rinie. Desaturating and adding some noise works very well. Very interesting, creative and beautiful shot. WOW.

Ah! EXCELLENT idea and composition. This is very creative, and now that you've got them all in one image, lets ban those cell phones from our daily life once and forever!!

That's a great montage, I was thinking after seeing Curtis' that the next scavenge hunt should have 'Someone using a cellphone', (or mobiles, as we call them here). What do you think? pts tomorrow.

Very effective, Rinie - wow, you ARE getting brave :) I really like the pp work you've done on this. And yes, those mobile phones are damned annoying, unless you're the one using them - then they're a miracle of convenience!

Mooi gedaan Rinie.

Goed werk.

Well Rinie, what can I add?! This is good and has a very journalistic appearance. Your compilation looks as if they are still pictures of a TV-documentary. Great post-processing work: I like the grains and the desaturated colours. The mix of ethnical backgrounds of the people is very well chosen and balanced. Great!

Great photo, though it is sad to see people "attached" to their cell phones like this. Sometimes when you are shopping, you think someone is talking to you, but find they are on the cell phone. I don't know why people must "chat" to someone all day long on the phone. Anyway, the photo is a great collection of human moments and a window on our world of today. The idea of a collage is great it just emphasizes the importance of these phones to so many people. Very creative way of showing a selection of images and with great crops.

HI Rinie!
Sorry for being too late, had a hard time but I promise to recover time lost!
They look so cool with their cell phones that this can be used for advertizing!
I work in a cellular company and I am also tired of these little devices which can turn anyone crazy!!!
The one at the bottom left seems Mel Gibson...doesn`t he?
The PP worked definitely fine here, you certainly suceeded according to my thinking.

Great and original idea you got here Rinie - I like to watch those faces - they say a lot of whats going on in the conversation - surprice, anger - happyness - thanks for sharing this fine work.
Yes cellphones, very nice to have - but its possible to live without :-)

Very nice montage Rinie! Fine work you did here, I like the style, these cell phone freaks look so busy! Cell phone is my nightmare ;-), but I HAVE to be reachable everywhere I am :-(. Anyway a wonderful presentation you present here, I like it very much, not an easy one, and the grainy style comes out very fine. Excellent!

Hello my dear Rinnie: Wow, I loved this picture. Excellent topic, Excellent selection, is brilliant, I like the granulated effect that you added him. The captured expressions count a history different from each person.
More than one month ago they stole my cellular 5 minutes before ascending to the bus to travel to the capital of the country, I lost numbers of important telephones it is the first calendar of my cellular and good it was a chaos but then I tried to take it like an experience, the time has passed and I have resisted the temptation to buy another to enjoy the privacy and of the freedom that me to have before. Before an of my friends said: Ninfa can be in the forest without any accessory, she can be left without eating, but what she cannot be is without its cellular telephone and well, because I believe that after one month I have survived without this technology although sometimes if I can tell you that I sometimes miss a little. I liked the selection and the sequence a lot in which organized it, very good work of your new camera (congratulations) and excellent your work. Saludos Cordiales. Feliz Fin de Semana. *Ninfa Urania*

very efficient collage, no doubt. These cell phones makes us realize how the world starts to look the same evrywhere, if not in geography, in what people's days are like.
It's like traveling far and still be home! :-(

Me encanta... Usually I´m not a very good friend of this kind of muti-photos or whatever is called. But this one I like it deeply. Multiplicity works, giving me the idea of a technological invasion, of surrender. I like to see their faces which are, my face, your face, many people´s faces. Congratulations.

Cell phones are everywhere & while I have one too & find it useful it can be annoying! So I put it on silent... :)
Funny how none of the people in the photo (except maybe the 1st girl on the right) seem to notice that they're being photographed - are the conversations that engrossing?
Nice idea anyway!
