Haringvliet Dam

In 1953, the disasterous flooding claimed 2000 lives and caused massive destruction in the souther part of the Netherland - so called Delta area.
Right after the flooding, the massive, ambitious project, named 'Delta werken' was undertaken. It aim was simple: to guard Netherland territory from the flooding which attacked country through all its history.
The Haringvliet Dam is a part of the system of movable gates and dams, built around the country. Situated south from Rotterdam; construction started in 1953 and completed in 1971.
The dam consist of 17 compartments, each of them has 2 movable gates - from sea and fresh water side. To adjust levels of sea and river at both sides of the dam, gates are being open/closed (upper position/low position) every 6 hours.
At the photo you see that gates of the compartments 17 and 16 are open to adjust water levels.
At the Dam, there is a useful visitors center with guided tours around and INSIDE the dam. More info:
