Photographer's Note

This time there is no trick or twist in the title at all, it is an actual name of the tower. If you look at the very top of it, you can even spot a tiny silhouette of a witch to prove it.

The Tower of Witches (Baszta Czarownic) in Słupsk was part of the old town fortifications built from the beginning of the 14th to the mid-15th century. They replaced the older palisade which was already mentioned in 1325. The height of the town walls was about 6.5 m. The walls were fortified with towers. In the 17th century, a modern defense system was introduced outside the walls and the interior of the Tower of Witches was transformed into a prison for women accused of witchcraft. The witches were investigated = tortured in this tower and this is also where they were held here before the execution - burning at the stake. The last victim of a witch trial in Słupsk, which at that time was part of Prussia, was a Catholic woman, Trina Papisten. Later, the interior of the tower was converted into apartments. From the beginning of the 19th century, the tower was used as a stable, then it became a prison again in 1871. The tower was damaged in 1945 during the war. The reconstruction of the witches' tower took place in the years 1970�1973, and the interiors and fa鏰des from the town side were transformed.
