Postcard from Cani鏰l, a photo from Madeira, Islands

Photographer's Note

On my way to the Ponta de S鉶 Louren鏾 I have seen this beautiful fishing village, Cani鏰l, in amazing sunshine and full of eye catching colors but my plan was to make a short walk around the cliffs and spend the afternoon on a beach next to this village so I did not stop my car there thinking that I will take a lot of photos from this great spot later. Sadly, the blue sky was temporary and the clouds soon took over the island again. On the way back, soaked by the rain, we decided to skip the stay on the beach and head back to the hotel. I stopped to take this photo but it was nowhere nearly as beautiful as in the direct sunlight.

That was one of the worst days of my holidays. It started when I woke my family in the middle of the night promising them the spectacular sunrise above the clouds and stunning views from the top of a mountain. Sadly, there were no views, it rained all day long. Then we were supposed to drive to see characteristic to Madeira houses in Santana, but since it kept raining in the north we gave up on that. Then we went to Ponta de S鉶 Louren鏾 where for a brief moment we have experienced a sunshine, but the weather changed quickly and we were soaked in the storm. In the end the expected relax on the beach was cancelled too, it was cold, cloudy and unpleasant. We went back to the hotel where there was not much to do neither.

Hello Mariusz, what a pity that your plans were ruined by the inclement weather.
A good excuse to return at a later date.
Despite the weather, this is a great view.
You have used the curve of the bay as a good leading line that takes our eyes right through the scene.
The sharp quality is excellent.

I like the low hanging fog and mist on the bg hills. A good high pov with excellent sharpness. The lighthouse adds a good focal point and the fg palm adds depth and layering to the composition. Tfs!

A great sight from the high point, Mariusz, but the real attraction when I look at this picture is the contrasting colors of the sea and sky against the rocks & land with orange-brown hue's.
Town houses beautifully built on the shallow slope and there is a fine view to the far side mountains and bay with a vessels.

Totally unfortunate day, but at least you took this beautiful picture, a fishing port but built with new houses that do not have a devastating concrete impact as I have seen in other places, top quality as always. You found a good viewpoint with the palm in the foreground and the curve of the coastline leading towards the town and the higher cliffs. The warm colours look appealing on this cloudy day.

Hello Mariusz,
I must have passed this village on my way to Ponta de S鉶 Louren鏾. But I don't remember it.
However, it looks very nice with almost all the facades of the houses built in the same direction.
The clouds are indeed hanging on the mountain peaks and it looks a little less attractive to go hiking there.
Beautiful panorama with the two successive bays and the small plant makes the foreground a lot prettier.

I guess from 1980, when I visited the island, to today, number of inhabitants of the island grew up very much.
excellent image of the village and the seashore ahead. I guess I visited this place.
reading your note I remembered my trip to salvador da bahia in the worst part of the year. I was walking there while people were dying because the slums were falling down under the heavy rain..

Hello Mariusz,

I understand how disappointed you must have felt, to have seen this beautiful, fishing village in bright sunshine, only to have it denied to you when there with your camera!
However, though the mood may appear different, the beauty is still there and you have chosen a good vantage point to make the most of your composition.
I like your use of the palm plant to anchor the f/g, before the curve of the cliffs leads succinctly to the neat little houses.
The mist over the distant hills helps to engender a long sense of depth.

Ciekawie skomponowane zdjecie z twojego ostatniego pobytu w Portugalii. Ladne miasteczko na wybrzezu ponizej gory z malym portem i latarnia morska. Pomimo pochmurnego dnia oswietlenie jest bez zastrzezen.
