Photographer's Note
Good light is essential for capturing interesting photos. Sadly, too often, when in travel you must “take it or leave it”. The most extreme case during my trip was the sunrise on the top of the mountain when dense fog and rain did not allow me to see anything at all. This hike in the North East end of the Madeira Island was without a doubt spectacular. I could see it but I could not really take decent photos there. I realized now that most people actually follow a very different trail from this parking area. Paul, I think you went in a different direction, so I could not reach the picnic area or the oasis which you mentioned. Indeed, most postcards show this place from the other end, which I realized later. Nevertheless, every bit of this hike offered stunning vistas, and the rock formations were so colorful, well displaying their volcanic origin and high iron content. The photos I took there are not impressive though, so I may just show one of them here, to prove that the weather was really bad. Please compare this photo with my other picture of the cliffs taken when the weather was still good:

The tallest peak in both photos is the same and yet they look quite differently due to very different point of view and the light of course.

Hello Mariusz, the terrain looks quite inhospitable and difficult to walk.
This is a spectacular view; the colours are beautiful.
The picture is made even more interesting by the people walking the ridge in the mid-distance.
Excellent sharp quality.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Mariusz,
Despite the clouds, I still find this a very spectacular landscape to hike.
The people we see here can only undergo this grandiose environment as themselves insignificantly small.
Seeing your photos, I'd like to go back someday to this magnificent island in the Atlantic.
At the time I had a good walking book (in English) with about 20 routes mapped out of which we only did 4 (four long hikes that took each the better part of a day followed by a sightseeing day each time to recover a bit).
I don't understand dat I could have walked in a different direction. I just had another look at the Google map of Madeira and the eastern peninsula has only one trail that loops at the end and then you return along the same path.
Further east than that loop you arrive at the end of the peninsula and you can't go any further. Behind it there is another elongated island that I have not been to (and which you probably cannot go on).
I don't understand what other tour the Ponta de São Lourenço can have.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao Mariusz, maybe you are too critical of yourself, you often complain about the light and the weather, but your photos are always excellent. This has a remarkable sharpness, you can count the people walking in this magnificent scenery. And anyway I was also much more unfortunate, perhaps the only one to find a thick fog in the Sahara desert in Oman, in search of the dawn .. ahaha ... Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hi Mariusz
I hadn't realised that Madeira is so rugged. A good sharp photo of this ridge line with lots of great colour and texture in the rocks.
cheers

A stunning sight of the big rocky cliff, and fabulous colors of the terrain, mariusz.
Good scale by the hikers with view of the far side green high mountains and fine clear sight.
Looks challenging.

Hello Mariusz,
Superb elevated pov with the hikers on the distant ridge adding scale. I like the warm cold colour contrast between the rust red rocks and the blue shadowed bg. The white building or lighthouse atop the hill at left looks like it would offer a terrific view too. Tfs!

mariusz
the rocks in madeira island are exactly the same we have in my town, the same texture, colors, etc. very nice this view where it is difficult to identify people, so small as ants, lost in the grandeur of the wild landscape. the abyss looks amazing here. I only saw this area at distance.
take care
