Photographer's Note

Saint Mary's Church in Lagos has been a place of worship since 1498, and continues to be a vibrant local parish church. The original building is thought to have once had a hospital attached but almost all of what you see today was rebuilt in the 19th century.

The church was extended at various times over the centuries, and suffered significant damage in the Great Earthquake of 1755, after which it needed rebuilding. The whitewashed exterior has two bell towers, Doric columns and a sculptured, Renaissance door.

The relatively understated, bright interior is a far cry from the plush grandeur of some of Lagos抯 other churches. There is a single nave, a raised choir and there are three side chapels. A statue of Saint Goncalo, a 15th century saint who became an Augustinian preacher and was considered to be the patron saint of local fishermen, is on display here.

Good morning Stephen,

I love photographs of church interiors and this one is a very appropriate follow up from your photograph from yesterday of the exterior of this particular place of worship.

A fine symmetrical composition with lovely soft light and true colours. You have managed the contrasts between extreme light levels very well and we can see full details in the very brightest parts and also in the deepest shadows. Excellent details and sharpness too.

Hello Stephen,
I appreciate this church for its relatively modest decorations. Some baroque churches are just too much for me. This one has a pleasant simplicity, and you also managed a perfectly symmetrical photo with excellently handled light.

Hello Stephen,
I just commented on Krzysztof's photo of the Frauenkirche in Dresden and the contrast with the interior of this church can hardly be bigger, both in design and the number of visitors! But this church has a lovely calm mood too and the symmetry is wonderful.
