Biertan Fortified Church

Transylvania has got many fortified church from the 13th to 16th century and earlier I posted the one in the town of Bazna. Seven of the fortified churches are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the one in this photo is one of them. It is located in the town of Biertan. The Gothic church was completed in 1524 and is a Lutheran church built by the Transylvanian Saxons.

En vacker bild fr錸 Biertan, en av de fins gamla sm錽t鋎erna som jag ocks� bes鰇te. Jag k鋘ner igen den h鋜 vinkeln, utom de sm� tr鋒yddorna som jag inte vet vad de kan han anv鋘ts till. Kyrkan 鋜 m鋕tig och de andra byggnaderna 鋜 vackra. Fint ljus hade du ocks� och det blev en fin exponering.

Hello Lars,
Romania is the first place I have heard of fortified churches. Were they protecting themselves from the Muslims (Ottomans)? Although the new(er) additions look pretty, they are taking away from the grandeur of the fortifications.

Hello Lars, These fortified cutches look rather like castles. They all are very interesting and unique. I visited a few of them, also Biertan. I wonder what are these small wooden objects. Many nice towers. There are so many beautiful places in Romania. I was there with my husband, a precious memory.

Quite an extraordinary structure indeed. I like the design of the towers. Everything really resembles a lot fairy tale like decorations.
Nice to have the flag in the foreground which adds a local touch.

Hello Lars,

The Gothic style church towers high into the sky, creating an imposing impression. You have chosen a good viewpoint to include the whole building in its entirety and captured it with excellent clarity.
I can understand the need to have fortified churches; churches contained rich objects and were usually a target for invading forces.

Impressive architectural ensemble that forms the church and the towers of the wall that protect it, at the top of the hill, also beautiful are the two houses with those pastel tones located at the same foot of the hill.
Sharpness, lighting, color, and magnificent composition; They are managed perfectly, in this beautiful image.
