Gargoyle, a photo from Barcelona, Catalonia

Photographer's Note

I think that this is a gargoyle; a strange bat like creature that I saw as an ornament on the Arc de Triomf, the arch which is a grand entrance to the Parc de la Ciutadella. (The arch is pictured in the w/s.)

The Arc de Triomf was designed for the 1888 Exhibition by Josep Vilaseca i Casanoves.
Topping the arch are angels tooting horns and offering wreaths.

The Parc was built on the site of a former military fortress; it was artfully designed to offer Barcelona's citizens an experience of nature, recreation and culture.

Hi Jean,I honestly don't know what this decoration is and unfortunately I missed a visit to this arch when I was in Barcelona. Interesting post, the details are not the best but this time there is the difficulty of light and distance, excellent backlighting instead in the WS. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Jean,
It looks like a gargoyle, but whatever it is it's an interesting figure and it's surrounded by very attractive ornaments and patterns. At first I thought it might have been some other details from La Sagrada Familia, but it turned out yo be something quite different. The WS gives us a good view of the Arch, which has a place no less impressive than the one in Paris.

Gargoyle probably although the mouth (very small in this case) is usually a water spout for run off rainwater. A good photo of an interesting one. And a WS photo of this different to the usual Arc de Triomf.

Very original one! I suppose when it rains this bat vomits?
Certainly a detail which nobody noticed before. I suppose this is the thing with towns which have a lot to offer that people are missing a lot of charming details like this.

Hello Jean,

I like when specific details are drawn to our attention and this bat sculpture was definitely worthy of attention. It's a nice crop to show its situation and surrounding features and textures.
It is a little soft in its focus. If you have PS, it would have been possible to sharpen it with the sharpen tool.

I've seen the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona but cannot remember its strange details.
This gargoyle strikes me as more suitable for a Batman movie.

I remember this arch, but not these details. in those days I hadn't a digital camera with a big zoom.
funny this bat with a bra. excellent use of elements, a pity the sharpness is not perfect. but it is a nice view.

A splendid composition with this detail of the Arc de Triomphe, I'm not sure it's a gargoyle, it seems to me more of an ornament... very interesting indeed.
Nice total view of the Arch at sunset on the WS.
A magnificent range of colors, which gives an attractive color scheme.
Very good management of luminosity, as well as the sharpness of the image.
A good job, with which we enjoy. I love it.
