Warmland, a photo from Varmland, Svealand

Photographer's Note

This is in the heart of the province of V鋜mland. The word 搗鋜m� makes you think of 搗鋜me� which is 揾eat� or 搘arm� in English. Unfortunately there is no connection language-wise. Otherwise this title would have been perfect, as the picture was taken on a very warm day when we had above 30癈.

The lake is 講re Brocken (Upper Brocken) in the municipality of Torsby and this place is called N鰐鰊 (Nut Island). This is one of our favourite places in Sweden, we spent most of our summer holidays here, from 1973 until 1988, when our children were small. They all learned to swim in this lake.

I have uploaded other pictures from this place, with more information in their notes.
One was called Twin Peaks and the other Nut Island.

As a coincidence, I noted that Bev had taken another picture the very same day. It was warm everywhere in northern Europe that day�

If you are looking for any action in this picture, you ahve to look carefully, there is in fact a girl in the water at the end of the jetty, kicking up small waves. Maybe this was a bit early in the morning for all the tourists in their mobile homes here.

This is a wonderful shot of this beautiful lake. The water gives a nice adding depth and balance for the scene. The pier adds life and direction to the scene. The lighting and colors are great and the photo has excellent sharpness and detail.

If Warmland isn't necessarily warm, then I guess that N鰐鰊 or Nut Island is not somewhere where nuts grow either?

I remember your "Twin Peaks" picture and now I suspect that that picture was taken from a point a bit farther along this shore line to the right of this jetty.

Not much sign of human activity in this picture but the wonderful peace and calmness which pervades it more than makes up for any lack of people. The lovely zig-zag of the lines of the jetty lead the eye nicely into the centre of the lake and onward to the distant trees and hills. Gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness, especially when viewed at its "proper" size of 1500 pixels wide.

A delightful scene beautifully captured. A composition that makes excellent use of the graphism offered by the foreground pier, which also serves to give the image depth and acts as a pointer drawing the viewer ever inwards. Superb light and colours.

How I would have liked to swim in this lake today. We walked a hilly 7 miles in the heat!
A lovely clear shot with the jetty taking the eye across the lake. The small touches of red are lovely against the blue water.

Hello Gunnar,

First, let me thank you for the link to my site. It certainly was a warm day, that day. We had to cover ourselves in sun lotion!
You have given us some interesting etymological details so I wondered if Nut Island had any link to nuts!

There are lots of similarities between Scandinavian words and those present in English, particularly in the north of England, where the Vikings had a strong presence. I find them quite fascinating.

A lovely, 'warm' photograph despite the predominance of blues.
The blue of the sky is reflected with greater depth of colour in the water. I like how the f/g is anchored, whilst the zig-zag jetty acts as a good lead from the f/g to a central point in the lake.
I notice there is just a smidgen of red in your shot and it is strongly positioned on the thirds line.

This looks like such a peaceful place, and a nice spot to spend time during the summer. I must admit that I was looking for people, but didn't notice the ripples made by the girl until I read your note. The blue and green colors are nice, and the water is so calm. I've never swam in a lake. I had a small pool in my backyard as a child. :-)

a very lovely place, so pleasant to be there on a warm summer day. In my opinion, it owes its charm to the simplicity of the scenery, the deep blue colours and the absence of too many people or artificial additions. You captured the character and the atmosphere of the area at this specific moment with great efficiency. Yes, while you get hot weather in Scandinavia these days, we are suffering the wettest July in years over here. The really mean thing is that while I was in Finland in June, it was the coldest Juhanus afton in over 40 years there and the day we came back here the weather started to change ...
Anyway, having said that, this lake looks lovely and just perfect to spend the summer holidays with the kids. It must hold many fond memories for you then.

Howdy Gunnar,

Your saturated blue Ovre Brocken scene does beckon swimmers, with the dock intersecting and forest and hills background.

I also learned to swim in lakes and rivers. My Father loved to fish, but I preferred swimming, which I had to be careful and stay away from his fishing spot.

Just a Swedish lake I can remember from early days when we traveled a lot through Scandinavia. I can remember what a great pleasure it was swimming in these lakes. I think I once was in the neighbourhood travelling from Mora to Sunne.

I like the zig zag pier and the calm, mirror like surface of the water reflecting the blue skylight. Good sharpness and excellent saturation. The dark, forested hills in the bg add a nice graphic element and focal point. The diagonal shore at right adds good lead in lines to the pier. Tfs!
