Photographer's Note

The Matterhorn ( Italian: Cervino ) is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetric pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summit is 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe.

The mountain overlooks the Swiss town of Zermatt, in the canton of Valais, to the north-east and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia in the Aosta Valley to the south.

The first ascent of the Matterhorn was in 1865 from Zermatt by a party led by Edward Whymper; it ended when four of its seven members fell to their deaths on the descent. This disaster, later portrayed in several films, marked the end of the golden age of alpinism. The north face was not climbed until 1931 and is among the three biggest north faces of the Alps, known as "The Trilogy". The west face, which is the highest of the Matterhorn's four faces, was completely climbed only in 1962. It is estimated that over 500 alpinists have died on the Matterhorn, making it one of the deadliest peaks in the world.

Hello Piotr,
A fantastic view of this famous peak in the Alps. You show its slopes so beautifully and the details are lit by a perfect light. The peak itself is very nicely wrapped up in clouds too.

wow, i had no idea so many people have died trying to climb this mountain...and what irony that you'd die climbing back DOWN - that would be incredibly frustrating. I love hiking, but not so much alpine mountain climbing! great note to accompany the pretty photo. excellent TE post

Piotr, the hiking trail crosses an area of Alpine pastures. I see a chapel or a shelter on the right. The summit is hidden behind the clouds. It is covered with permanent snow in summer. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.

We can still see the cone perfect shape through the clouds, Piotr.
This is one of the most famous mountains in the world.
I had walk up its trail only 100m before had a cloud covered me in 1980.

What an impressive sight and what a great capture! Good lead in with the path and the hut smoothly guide the eye to the gigantic Matterhorn and there's abound of excellent colours and detail in bright summer day. The capping heavy clouds is an icing on the roll to finish off and this shot appears to take on a 3D characteristic. Superb capture

cześc Piotrze, Szkoda, że szczyt Matterhornu w chmurach, ale przez to wyglada bardziej tajemniczo. Turysta maleńki, ale od razu rzuca sie w oczy. Ciekawa chatka lub kapliczka. Majestatyczny krajobraz.
