Photographer's Note

This is an ordinary glass-cutter抯 workshop in Klochkivska, one of the oldest and longest Kharkiv抯 streets. There is a rich collection of monuments of the Soviet era there. I captured only a quarter of the whole collection. From the left to the right you see the following:

▼ Maxim Gorkiy;
▼ an unidentified person;
▼ Nikolai Ostrovskiy;
▲ Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya;
☼ Order of the Patriotic War;
▼▼▼▼ four statues of Vladimir Lenin;
▼ Karl Marx in front of them;
▼ Felix Dzerzhinskiy.

In the background you can see the top of the old Panteleymonivska Church behind a new car salon.

Hello Sergiy,

Fascinating shot with the communist statues in front, the capitalist car dealer in the background and just the tip of a church beyond. Volkswagen seems to be dominating religion these days. You be the judge whether things are getting better or worse. I feel completely alien to all three "religions".

Как мог пройти мимо. Я так и не понял, это музей под открытым небом, или пополнение собственного бюджета за счет потенциальных ностальгиков? Здесь, в воскресные дни, подобное можно видеть на маленьких компаниях, производяший статуи для зеленых участков, без политической оплеки только.

A good and unusual composition, in this picture that shows this group of sculptures of characters from the past abandoned.
The scene could be interpreted as the past is put aside, the modern building behind, such as innovation and progress does not stop, do not know, for better or worse, behind the church tower, which is always present in the lives of peoples.

Maybe I shouldn't smile but this is a rather fun collection of statues!
I have no idea why they are assembled in this place but they have obviously been moved from somewhere else...
Is it kind of street sale maybe? Whatever, a striking documentary of the change in times..!

very interesting collection from the past. I think in Poland we have damaged most of the monuments. At the moment nobody misses them yet in such a context they are a valuable collection teaching about the past.

Fantastic package, Sergiy. The photograph is fascinating, the quality of the busts reveals a talented and frustrated sculptor (more interested in having a private museum than making money), and your note is informative. The comments by Benny V is complementary also. Given sufficient time, I would have recognized the likeness of Maxim Gorki, of course Lenin and Karl Marx. In my library/home theater I have bookcase size busts of Michelangelo, Beethoven, Einstein, and a few Greek Gods (Hermes, Poseidon, Hygeia...)

a very nice collection of the communism icons. I guess they should be preserved in some way, they are a portrait of a period of history. very nice your image, perfectly shown, with good light, framing and sharpness. nice contrast, with a bit of humour.
