Ukrainian Desert under Sunset Light, a photo from Khersonska, East

Photographer's Note

This is Oleshky Sands, the Europe抯 largest expanse of sand. Although the sands occupied the area of around 1600 km�, we could not find them for two days because there was a dense forest around them. The forest prevents enlargement of the sands. All roads thru the forest were sandy except one, which had been built a couple years ago, when a big fire was there. Our bikes wanted to drive only along that road, but it was not on maps. Fortunately, those, who caused the appearing of the sands in XVIII century, helped us to find the road at that time. They were a shepherd with his flock of sheep. After 7 km of pretty good gravel road we were at an observation post of the former Air Force bombing range, where the road and the forest came to the end, but there were a well with good fresh water and a shed, which we had our overnight stop under.

it was with great pleasure and interest I read your nice note that is accompanying this fascinating impression of the sands. There is an amazing atmosphere of this desolated landscape indeed!

Interesting composition to show a hidden site, the sand dunes with plants less look very soft shining by soft sunlight, good pov to show the wide landscape, thanks for sharing.

Hi Sergiy,
Quite frankly, it's not such an attractive photo, but I am glad you posted it because I didn't know about this large piece of land and it seems that it's the first time someone shows it in TE. But I really don't find it a bad photo, besides being effective as documentary, it has a beautiful pinkish light.
