Photographer's Note
There is an English phrase "the beauty is in the eye of the beholder". It means that the beauty is relative. People may like different things. People may see reality differently.
I suppose artists are not only people who mastered certain artistic techniques but most importantly those who can perceive the world differently, maybe more or less colorfully. Like the artist in this photo, who is surrounded by the black and white reality and yet in his works he painted the world so very colorful. Even in the photography, which seem to be merely a reproduction of the surrounding world, I often experience the conflict: Should I show the world exactly as it is recorded by the camera without any post processing? What if I wait for the sun to come out, consider the favourable composition, show the place in the best possible light and context. Is it a manipulation already? For example if people see my photos from England, they may reach the wrong conclusion that it is always sunny and colorful here. They can come with complaints to me when they see the sad reality. Because without the sunshine the colors are gone and there is a lot of shades of gray instead. These were my thoughts when I was selectively desaturating this photo.
I will be honest. I really wanted to show one more church from Lviv: Church of the Transfiguration (Храм Преображення Господа Ісуса Христа) but when I was around it, I had a terrible light.
The church has one larger dome and two smaller towers. I have showed a view towards the small towers from a very different point of view here:
https://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/Ukraine/West/Lvivska//photo1544185.htm
I have seen a lot of beautiful photos of this church from this market square on which artists display their paintings. It was even more photogenic in the past when the dome was green.
I had a terrible sky there, so I considered to turn this photo into black and white, but then I thought I will loose the color of the colorful paintings in the foreground. So this is how I decided to go for a compromise which you see in this photo.
You can read more about the church under my previous photo (link in the text above).
By the way, the Russian media and Russian trolls in the internet try to relativize the situation in Ukraine, and they may have been even successful when Russia invaded Crimea or started the war in Donetsk.
But after Russia decided to start a full scale invasion on the Ukraine territory, nobody has doubts anymore. The situation is crystal clear, black and white.
They may have used the excuses about the presence of NATO in neighbouring countries or about the imaginary genocide in Easter Ukraine to negotiate.
But after they started a new full blown war, there is no doubt.
They say: "Look what you made me to do" - But no, this excuse may work with children in the primary school but not in the international community.

Good colors cast against B&W picture, Mariusz.
Long ago, there were no cameras - so painters would masterfully paint what the humen eyes saw. Like we use a camera in modern life.
Cheers,
Ike

Hi Mariusz, really a great idea and your elaboration is great, a nice way to show this church in Lviv without being bothered by difficult light and without losing the colors of the paintings. Congratulations also for the notes, we are not so stupid to believe all the lies of the Russian media and to believe that in England there is always the sun..ahaha .. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Mariusz,
A nice mix of black and white and the colourful paintings in the foreground. The church, right in between the trees, makes a great backdrop and the artist himself is well included, too.

Hello Mariusz, an excellent presentation; good choice to desaturate everything apart from the paintings.
I like your reference to ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, these paintings are not to my taste, but yet as part of the whole picture that you share with us here, it becomes more attractive.
Thanks for sharing, Jean.

Hi Mariuz,
Use of partial desaturation works especially well here. It gives an impression that those paintings are kind of more real than actual space around them. This gives also good appreciation to vibrant colours of the paintings.

Hello Mariusz.
A magnificent job of desaturating part of the photo, (a job I don't know how to do) leaving the colorful paintings that shine even more over the rest in B&W, the church from this angle looks quite simple, although very well framed between the trees.
Very effective color in the paintings, which highlights the details of the image.
A good management, both of the luminosity, and of the sharpness.
Very well done. I like.
Enjoy the weekend.
My best wishes for you.

mariusz
a special compo using well the real life in B&W and the paintings in color. yes, each one can see something different in an artwork, it is a matter of fillings too, not only reason. and the war is going ahead, so sad for the world. my state received the first 25 people from ukraine.
take care
