Arundel Autumn, a photo from West Sussex, England

Photographer's Note

Arundel Castle bathed in a watery autumn sun amidst a sea of autumn colours. Arundel sits on the River Arun in the county of West Sussex, England. There has been a castle here since it was founded in 1067 under the reign of William the Conqueror. Damaged during the English Civil War it was extensively restored in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is the hereditary stately home of the Dukes of Norfolk having been in their family for over 400 years. Most of the castle and its grounds are open to the public and it remains the principal seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, although the castle in now owned by a private charitable trust.

Hello Brian,
The point of view is perfect to show the castle in all its glory. The framing trees in their autumn foliage are quite delightful and nicely complement the colours of the architecture. River and boats are the cherry on the top. Superb presentation with top class, light, colours and sharpness.

I have to agree with Craig, why haven't we seen this on TE before, its just amazing. The autumn colours are magical, but the castle itself is super impressive. Composition is stupendous, I just love this shot. TFS

Nice composition with the dungeon and the 'on fire' tree both in strong points of the 1/3 rule

In you last 3 images, i found that you raised the dark tones a lot, is it a new treatment you try ??

Hi Brian. Incredibly beautiful. i cannot put my finger on it, but I am continually amazed at the beauty you are able to convey. I started to critique your previous shot with the words "Only in England..." and then I gave up. I still don't know what makes these photos of yours excel- the light, the harmony of colour, the harmonious way the houses, castles, cottages, churches sit on the landscape, the sense of history... Whatever the ingredients are, the end result is truly, poetically English. regards. Klaudio.

I love seeing those boats there! They give us a good sense of scale and add interest to that place too, because we have an idea of other elements that exist there!

MNerito tuo e della tua accuratezza in ripresa, ma credo che un elogio vada fatto anche alla tua Sony Alpha, che seppure poco diffusa, � straordinaria per i risultati tecnici che offre.

Hello Brian,
excellently composed shot with really superb and eye-catching graphics!
It makes the scene takes on a romantic and so pleasant look.Really your PP work is as great as the Castle itself.What I enjoy more about it is definitely the color scheme of the image-warm colors of the trees contrast really nice to grey/blue tones of the Castle and the sky.

Hello Brian,

This is a gorgeous autumn scene! Of course the fall colors are beautiful, but there is so much more to this photo. The castle is very impressive, and I also really like the small boats in front of the trees. The blue tarps jump out, and they are a nice compliment to the autumn leaves. The lighting is also warm and wonderful.

BTW, my anti-virus software (McAfee) also dislikes the TE forums. :-) I decided to take a chance, and I accessed the forums and have run virus scans afterwards. So far nothing bad has happened. I hope it stays that way!!

Hi Brian, Fantastic view of the Arundel castle in Autumn. Splendid shot, I love these golden trees and the blue boats below. Gorgeous view, composition colours, sharpness, all stunning.
I was in this castle in prehistoric times (1977).

The impressive castle is prominently rise above the trees canopies, and a fabulous sight of its edifice.
Typical built cylindrical towers and smaller turrets, all dip in vivid autumn colors.
The boats anchored looked at first glimpse as car parked...
Lovely place, well collected.

A fabulous composition with a beautiful side light that enhances the architecture and the autumn leaves of the trees. We made a stop at Arundel castle but did not see it from this point of view.

what a beautiful castle plus autumn trees and the superb photo of them! the light you had here was special, and your pp work enhances it to a higher taste. i like the square crop, leaving out probably what is not so necessary, and still keeping in myriads of details. the boats indicate the water nearby, and look so charming with their small touches of blue.

Hi Brian,

It is very unusual to see boats moored in front of a castle such as is depicted here. Marvellous warm cold colour contrasts between the blue sky and the yellow Autumnal foliage. The blue tarpaulin covers on the boats enhance the effect. Excellent shadow detail & framing. Tfs!

Hi Brian,

Hope things have been well for you over the last couple of weeks, looks like I've sure missed some great photos! I'm just starting to return to "normal" and wanted to write and give thanks for your support and encouragement, it's genuinely appreciated!

I should be back around in a few more days, but wanted to take a moment to get caught up a bit and this particular picture jumped out from what I'm now seeing for the first time. Love the modern boats set in front of this spectacular castle. The touch of blue mixed in with the Fall colors is gorgeous, and that is one impressive structure. What a grand arrangement this is from top to bottom.
