Photographer's Note
The Newlyn Fisherman Memorial.
Situated on the edge of Newlyn Green, on the outskirts of Penzance, Cornwall.
This life size bronze casting was made by the artist Tom Leaper.
The memorial was built to honour dead fishermen, with over 20 local men having died fishing since 1980.
Money was raised to pay for the statue locally.
About Tom Leaper:- "Born in Newlyn into a family of studio potters, Tom Leaper developed his own artistic style while working in the pottery before going on to study sculpture."
"Over the years I've become a skilled metal worker, using sheet bronze, stainless steel and copper as well as solid casting in bronze and iron."
The first time that we saw this statue, (I can't quite remember the year,) it was the day before Princess Anne was going to come and unveil it, and the red carpet had been laid down in preparation!
Two more views in the w/s.
Thanks for looking. Keep safe!

I liked these three versions of the sculpture. nice details, looks like the stone ball was floating in the rounded hole. this remind me a fountain I saw in russia where we could to move the heavy stone ball because it was being pushed up by the water.
take care

Bonjour, cher Jean,
Très bonne soirée;
Amitiés.

Hi Jean, very evocative when you think of the number of fishermen who have lost their lives. I like the perspective of the small town in the background.

Hello Jean,
A very good and realistic and rather touching sculpture, It looks good from any angle, and the three photos are equally well taken. It's a matter of personal taste which background one prefers, but this one showing the sea is probably the best choice.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Jean,
As always, I've loved reading your note which is interesting and informative but also has a lovely personal tone to it.
I've no idea who was the god of photographers but, on the day you took these three photographs, he or she certainly blessed you with the most glorious light - or, on second thoughts, it was no doubt purely skill on your part - which has given these images a fabulous, almost three dimensional, quality which makes the statue stand out perfectly against its background. I think that effect is most pronounced in this photograph and also in workshop #2, maybe on account of the lovely sky, I'm not sure - but it is also there to a slightly lesser extent in workshop #1 though the sky there is slightly brighter and less interesting.
As far as the sculpture itself, I'm not always overly impressed by modern sculptures but this one I think is just fabulous - not only is it a good representation of a fisherman but it also has a definite and strong dynamism.
Yes, three fabulous photographs of stunning quality - a perfect presentation for TE.
Splendid!
You take care.
Kind Regards,
John.
P.S. This just has to go to my "favourites"!
P.P.S. The date you were thinking of was 10th October, 2007. The Princess Royal unveiled this statue on the 11th. I discovered that on a "wiki" page on which you can also see an absolutely dreadful photograph here:

Hello Jean,
An excellent close-up photo of this monument of the fisherman. You caught him in a very nice, gentle sunlight, which makes him stand out well from the clouds. The town in the distance is nicely seen in between his legs.

Hello Jean, Interesting monument as the hommage for the brave fishermen who often risk their life going into the sea. in the main picture, we can also see the bay, probably during low tide. Nice composition. The monument looks interesting from all sides.
have a nice weekend

Jean, this sculpture depicts a fisherman holding a rope. It was installed on the seafront near a seawall. A town and the coastline appear in the bg. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Hello Jean,
Newlyn is famous for the School of Art but I did not know about the fisherman sculpture or the reason for its construction.
It is a very impressive piece of art and beautifully photographed by you, from all angles.
I really like how you have composed the photograph so that the sculpture is standing proud of the sea wall.
The bronze now has a very lovely verdigris patina.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Jean.
Magnificent this sculpture tribute to fishermen, like the other two images that we see in the WS, located in a beautiful place overlooking the sea, as a background the landscape of the coast and the town at the end, complements this beautiful photo.
Excellent POV, with very good lighting, color and sharpness to enjoy the details.
Very good work. I like
Enjoy a happy Sunday.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Good morning Jean,
Three pictures show the statue from all sides, facing the sea.
A tribute to fishermen, mounted on a high point of the beach at low tide we see on the background.
The sky were a bit 'washed", still the outcome of the pictures is clear with distinct outlines.
Have a nice nrew day,
Ike
