Photographer's Note

A bakers' stall at the market in Saffron Walden.
Saffron Walden is a picturesque, medieval town in north west Essex.

A market has been held here since 1141. Market days are now held on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The food on offer is the market's greatest strength, it includes stalls selling cheese, fruit and vegetables, olives, breads, eggs, whole foods and more....
The market also has many more stalls selling a myriad of other items.

Hello Jean,
Today's three photos are all interesting and offer us lots of fine details. I'm slightly in favour of WS #1, which to me is the best composition and shows us a long line of customers. From this angle, on the other hand, you managed to naturally crop the rather washed out sky, so I can understand that you preferred this as the main photo. I imagine the hotel/pub in the other WS would be a nice place for a meal and a beer after finishing the shopping.

Hello Jean, On the TE page on Saffron Walden there are some photos shown by you but with the different nick and also two of my pictures. It seems that no one else visited this charming village. I was there almost exactly ten years ago. I liked the small colourful houses very much. Nice scene from the traditional market. Nice the same pattern in the table sheet and apron of the vendor.

This is a very pretty town and deserves to have a market, like this, offering home made produce, so nicely arranged! (You cannot help but be tempted by such a neat, patterned arrangement!) And, at a time like this, just before teatime, it makes me feel very hungry, I'm a sucker for bread!

This is a fine, informative shot and has great depth when you look at the figures going right into the b/g!
It was a toss up, whether to use this, or the line of customers, as your main shot; I agree with you.

I like these kinds of markets, especially when there are sweet treats to buy. :-) There's a similar market in Union Square in Manhattan every week. Nice view of the men at work, and all the baked goods around them. Take care!

good PoV for an overview of his delicious looking breads and pastries. For the composition I may have excluded the half people on the right hand side and concentrated on the two pairs of shoppers at the end.

here a mayor created the street market during 1990's. anyway after some years of success the market got an intense competition with cheap vegetables sold by some supermarkets.
I liked a lot these details and the breads and sweets looks nice and the guy is well positioned in the image.

I like the first photo of the workshop. I wish the original photo you shared showed the full face of the buyer and the man staring at her. This is a shot of the daily life of the people of your country and it is worth exploring. Thanks for sharing
