Photographer's Note
We have been away for a week in Cornwall, and my access to the internet has been very spasmodic to say the least!
We went to the little village of Cadgwith on the Lizard peninsula. Cars have to be parked a little out of the village, so as we walked and followed the path to reach the heart of the village and the sea we encountered this thatcher working on this roof.
I was unsure as to whether he would want his photo being taken, hence the short distance between us.
"Thatching is the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, rushes etc., layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof.
Since the bulk of the vegetation stays dry and is densely packed, trapping air, thatching also functions as insulation.
It is a very old roofing method and has been used in both tropical and temperate climates."
Two more shots in the w/s, slight variations on the same view.
Thanks for looking.

Hello Jean,
I would not consider anyone's feelings or preferences if given the chance for a photo like this. This was a photo opportunity not to be missed, and he should anyway have been too far away to hurt you in case he would have been angry. Are you a good runner? ;-)
It's wonderful that traditional crafts like this still remain in some places. In this case the buildings are so pretty and they are very nicely situated between the steep hills.
The wires are an annoyance, but they don't spoil the photo. Erasing them in at least the main photo might have taken you maybe 15 minutes.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Jean, certainly a beautiful village, without cars, it seems to take a step back in time. Three beautiful photos of this roof under renovation, very picturesque but, as the inhabitants said in Kenya, it requires a lot of maintenance and is extremely expensive. I am pleased to know that even in England there are places with little coverage of the web connection, it is not just an Italian problem .. ahhaa .. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hi Jean,
Beautiful view of these old buildings. Maintenance of the roof is obviously essential. Being on the lower ground those houses seem to be hiding behind bushes and grass.

Hello Jean,
A nice view of the house in between the green parts all around. The old thatched roof, which is being renovated looks really nice and the man repairing it is well included as well.

Hi Jean
I've given up trying to post photos when traveling.
A good trio of photos of traditional roofing underway, something that I'd hoped to see when I visited Cornwall.
cheers

Hello Jean, Why this man would object to his photo being taken? I like such thatched roods in England very much They are so beautiful and also very effective in summer and in winter giving good insulation. The wires are usually a nuisance, but here they do not disturb so much.
Have a nice day

Hi Jean,
You caught him adding a final thatch to the roof :)
Very interesting scene with man at work. Especially with this type of job being not very popular these days. Probably not many people would be able to do it. And in the past Thatchers were so important they were even selected as Prime Ministers in this country!
Very nice context of the seaside village as well,

Hello Jean
The roof being rethatched nearing completion makes it look better already. Good to include the workman too. Excellent sharpness and elevated pov. Tfs!

Hi Jean.
What a fantastic image, as are those of the WS, very curious this way of covering the roofs, a technique that he already knew from having seen in the East, but had no idea that it was also used in the United Kingdom.
The town is truly authentic with its traditional style of houses both in shapes and auctions, the situation of these houses is a bit surprising, stuck in that depression in the land.
A fantastic photo, with beautiful natural colors, very good lighting and excellent sharpness.
Very well done. I'm lovin 'it.
Enjoy the weekend.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hello Jean,
What struck me first was how these houses are enclosed on several sides by green hills and by the sea.
Then I saw the thatcher.
Nice to live in but not easy for the workman to bring his materials when cars have to be left behind.
Best regards, Paul

jean
first time I saw such huts in english style was in uruguay, where they have a lot of love by UK. it is an impressive roof. I presume it should to last for many time, because should be expensive to pay the thatcher.. in my last trip I saw lots of huts covered with straw of palm trees in artistic ways, as the brazilian indians did.
take care
jorge
