Photographer's Note
Hello TE Friends,
It's a very long time since I have posted anything on TE but it's good to be back. How long for I cannot be sure! Other commitments seem to get in the way too often.
This picture is to celebrate the purchase of my first serious tripod - a Manfrotto. For all these years I had been relying on a small travel tripod or just resting the camera on any convenient surface I could find. I have to say that my first impressions of the Manfrotto are very good. It's very stable and helped to produce this crisp image even with a 3.6s exposure in windy conditions.
Anyway, on to the picture itself. It's a view from my balcony overlooking the River Thames. It is of course Tower Bridge in the centre of the picture with the City of London to the right. The lights in the foreground are from boats moored on the river.
In taking this picture I had to experiment with the white balance to achieve the correct hue, eventually settling on 3600K. On auto WB there was too much of a yellow cast from the city lights.
There was little post processing necessary: a minor amount of distortion correction to straighten the verticals on the left and a small amount of sharpening is all that the original hi-res version needed. For this TE low-res version I cropped slightly, sharpened more and the foreground had to be lightened a little to restore lost detail.
I hope you like it.
Jonathan

Hello Jonathan.
An night urban landscape enriched by a great perspective thanks to the foreground's lights and reflections.
My compliments for your purchase, I own a Manfrotto too and I'm satisfied.
Well done.
Best regards.

Hello Jonathan,
Quite a view you have from your balcony. The blue tones are great. The sharpness is very good and you have done a good job with straightning the lines.

Hi Jonathan
Good to see you back on TE. So this is the view from your balcony?? Wow. This is a stunning view, and excellent quality, pin-sharp and I like the graded light in the sky. The exposure is well managed too, and looks a bit tricky with the brightly lit bridge and dark foreground. The reflections on the water and on the building to the left give just enough light to keep the shot balance.

Hi Jonathan
I have a large benbo and I must admit it takes a lot of dicipline to carry it about with you. I am lazy and now tend to use the Image stabiliser within the Sony A700 which compensate for carrying all that weight around

well, it s like this pic changes my vision of London, where I ve never been in fact! I m not pro in night pics, but I like your point of view, private houses on the left, like an old harbour in the middle, the bridge full light in the back, and like the modern city on the right... great view;)
