Lake Urmia, a photo from Azarbayjan-e Gharbi, West

Photographer's Note

Taken enroute from Bucharest to Doha from a Qatar airlines flight, this use to be the largest lake in the Middle East and the 6th largest salt water lake in the world. But similarly to the Aral Sea, it has shrunk to 10% of its former size, following the damming of freshwater streams that lead into it. It has a noticeable pinkish colour. More info here:

Hello Chris,
A stunning sight from aloft, show the dry lake and the red texture of the wet sand. A photo from a place not so usual to see.
Visibility was excellent and you taken full advantage of the special situation.

Hi Chris,a great shot through the window of the plane.
We can even see the curve of the Earth.
You say that the lake has shrunk to about 10% of its former size? It would have filled the frame then.The colour is very interesting.
The tip of the plane's wing gives scale to the picture.

Hello Chris,
Human interference in nature sometimes has devastating results, and this seems to be one of those cases. Just imagine what this does to the lives of people living in this region. Maybe the rulers don't care because most people here are just Kurds.
It's definitely an interesting photo and with a certain beauty. It's fascinating to watch the lake, and the clouds are quite pretty. I like the sharp inclusion of the wing.

Hello Chris,
A fine aerial composition. The pink toned lake stands out like a sore thumb. I like the inclusion of the wing tip, which supplies context and a contrasting shape.

We see the lake and clouds on a very nice way.
Perspective and depth are excellent made.

yes, mankind have done many damages to nature. despite the problem the view up there is fantastic, in special with this curious red hues that remind me the bolivian lakes. very nice image took from a plane.
