Three pictures of the Mar-Saba monastery domes, with view across the Kidron canyon at the Lauras built onto the rocks.

The Mar-Saba monastery was founded by Sabbas-the-Sanctified in 483AD, located in the Judean desert east of Jerusalem, built above the stunning canyon of the Kidron creek in a remote area which was not an easily accessible until 40+/- years ago.
Considered to be one of the oldest inhabited monasteries in the Christian world, has sacred relics in its premises.

Hi Ike

The fg monastery adds depth and layering to the composition and the stunning backdrop of layered cliffs with dwellings here and there provides a marvellous focal point. Good sharpness and framing. Tfs!

Hi Ike,
Wonderful view of this ancient monastery. I wonder if the climate was more habitable those days when this was built. Desert landscape is charming in its own way. Those sedimentary layers are well visible on the background slope.

Hello Ike,
I guess the buildings have been restored a few times in the more than 1500 years the monastery has existed, but it's in any case an impressive sight. The fascination rests largely in the surroundings of these rocks. Both WS provide good complementary views.

Three great photos of Mar Saba monastery. You captured not only the beauty of the architecture but also the environment affected by dry and hot climate.
Just as I remember it from my visit in 2018 (I did a trip from Bethlehem).

I also like the photos in the WS, especially the second one.
Can anyone visit these monasteries?
Was it also possible to enter such a laura? Presumably they want to respect the privacy of those who live there.

Hello Ike,
A good photo of this monastery with its two domes, a large one and a smaller one. The sharpness is excellent, which makes them stand out so well from the cliffs and rocks in the background. Very well done.

as you know, i've really been enjoying these series of photos. Certainly a place I'd love to check out in person one day.
I wonder how many tourists visit these places, not many I bet.
great to look into the bg and see walls carved into the hillside, and the domes are super crisp and sharp. excellent shot

You have created a wonderful sense of place, with this arid, valley setting, beyond the temple domes. We can still see how hermit homes were created in the sheer walls!

The f/g of details of the monastery are crisp, with Christian details evident.
Your photograph creates a fine sense of depth!

I wonder what the sacred relics are!

The three photos show us interesting perspectives of this monastery, which seems to be in a rather isolated place and in a rugged and dry environment, attractive constructions with domes that I think are made of metal.
