Would be useful to read the notes, though - hope not too boring yet again:

A short time interval two pictures taken from same spot above the Kidron Canyon with notable changing colors as afternoon shadows approached.

The Mar-Saba monastery was founded by Sabbas-the-Sanctified in 483AD, located in the Judean desert east of Jerusalem, built above the stunning canyon of the Kidron creek in a remote area which is not an easily accessible until 40+/- years ago.
Considered to be one of the oldest inhabited monasteries in the Christian world, has sacred relics in its premises.

Main photo shows the well dug on the sheer slope and the ancient Laura built across on the far side cliff.

Hello Ike,
The WS is very similar, but this one has the advantage of including the well in the foreground. The hole in the ground adds some information on life in the monastery. As with the earlier photos from this area the scenery and the design of the monastery is fascinating.

Hello Ike, notes when relevant are never boring.
You had an excellent point of view from which to look down on the monastery. I find it amazing that it was built here and so long ago. A fantastic achievement.
The viewpoint emphasises the steep sides of this narrow valley.

TRULY, you posted today a piece of art featuring lot of real VERTICAL depth!!
The depiction of all picturesque elements is outstanding and quite thrilling, due to the unusual dwellings set on the sloping rock face.
I also envy this perfect picture because of your studied control on shadows and scarce highlights generating a magnificent tableau!
Quite a talented mix of perfect capture and informative document!

A beautiful combination of the monastery in front of the rocky cliffs. The former jumps out so well. The shapes of the rocks are wonderful too, especially in this nice and bright sunlight.

A location that is not easy to reach as I read in your notes, and perhaps this is why the place has retained its charm over its many centuries of history, a tour of the monasteries you have shown us must truly be a fairytale journey, but from do in winter with acceptable temperatures..ehhee .. Two equally worthy and spectacular photos of the exceptional place to live in the Judean Desert.
The well in the foreground is an extra beautiful element to choose this photo as the main photo.

Hi Ike,
amazing place where history and nature are so well combined. The availability of light is limited due to the shadow but it is probably for the best because in that way you avoid the harsh light and the colors are better so and the details of architecture better pronounced.

This monastery has a spectacular cliff side setting. The well in the fg adds depth and layering. Good sharpness and framing. Reminds me of Sumela near Trabzon in Turkey. Tfs!

you know I like these, so I don't find them to be boring at all, especially with the bg too. lots to see and lots to investigate if you spend the time. very clear and sharp, the stones are easily seen in excellent detail. nice shot indeed

What a viewpoint you had here!
Both photographs emphasise the steep-sided canyon and the precarious site of this very ancient monastery.
Fine details of the buildings and the eroded, rocky faces of the cliff.
I cannot imagine how the hermits hut, on the opposite side, was built!

Wow ...... incredible situation of this ancient monastery, hanging from one of the slopes, of this steep canyon, through whose bottom a stream runs. Impressive the vertical wall that we see in front.
Great color that brings out the details of the image.
