Photographer's Note
*** A cropped and correected version uploaded on the WS. Apparently late night posting is troublesome...
Just returned from a one long day trip to the Judean-Desert and Jordan-southern-valley monasteries. There are more than a dozen monasteries around this region, both in Israel and some within the Kingdom of Jordan.
It is a wide area only 80km from home – but a whole different landscape and adventure.
Will show some 30 or more photos from this trip where many highlights in this tour, one is the baptise site of Quasr-al-Yahud.
It is mostly sacred to Orthodox church worshipers, according to tradition beside the Jordan River, (Bethany-beyond-the-Jordan) where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.
According to other belief Joshua and Israelis crossed the river here from Moav Kingdom in 1280BC, entered the Israel land and conquered Jericho.
On wet winter season water level on the Jordan River can rise by 3m +/- higher.
The other side of the border is the Kingdom of Jordan, where a single Jordanian soldier and one family/tourists were on the site.
Location is at 31.83697, 35.5463 on the map.
This picture was taken with my cell-phone.

Hello Ike,
I guess when I was a child and we read about Jesus and the river Jordan in school we all imagined it to be something more than this narrow muddy stream. Considering its place also in modern history it's a far from impressive stretch of water, but this is a very interesting photo with the yellow sign as a good eye-catcher in the foreground and the church as a strong contender on the other side. Many members would have located this photo in Jordan to register one more country in their TE register. It wouldn't matter that they didn't actually cross the border.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Ike,
The trees are framing well the site. The point of view is showing the details of the Quser-Al-Yahud baptise site. The colors and the sharpness are very good. Have a nice day.

Hi Ike,the photo is very rich, excellent choice to start showing something from your today trip, very close to the Jordanian border and with this typically Orthodox monastery whose style is very well recognized.Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Ike,
A very nice view of this place with the river running right across the middle of the photo. The many trees and the buildings create a very nice composition together. Well done.

Ciao Ike, beautiful photo that tells a lot of history from the land that has been and is a meeting place and, at times, a clash between the three great monotheistic religions, splendid light and magnificent colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Ike, I was there but it was a long time ago, in the nineties. I was rather disappointed with this baptism site, and also Jericho, the oldest city on earth, was not so fascinating as I expected. I was later also on the other side not far from there - on the Mount Nebo and Madaba in Jordan.
Very nice picture, with the high reeds on the shore. I like the Orthodox church on the other side. Funny that it is a Russian warning too.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Ike,
Thanks for posting this as my Jordanian driver asked me if I wanted to detour to see it. I declined, preferring to travel directly from Amman to the Dead Sea. I have read since that only 10% of the flow remains in the Jordan River since Biblical times and what water there is left is polluted, so I made the right decision. Tfs!

Hello Ike,
There are not many photographs of Jericho on this site so your posts are sure to prove interesting.
This is a very nicely composed photograph, with the angled decking providing f/g interest and the border sign linking in shape and colours with the building at the back.
This must be a very interesting place, steeped in history!
All the best,
Bev :-)

Hi Ike,
I have actually seen this or similar place in a photo yesterday. UK has yesterday announced which countries are on the green list in regard to international travel. Israel is one of few. I have researched straight away whether it would be feasible to go for a week holiday there and indeed it seems like a great idea. There are direct flights from Manchester to Tel Aviv. Fantastic sandy beaches in Tel Aviv, like the Banana Beach or so. Not too expensive flight and good hotel near a beach. I was looking for day trips/tours from Tel Aviv and I think I would mainly stay on the beach but make a one day trip top Jerusalem/Betlehem and another day trip to Judaean Desert and Dead Sea.
Sadly then I noticed that Israel requires 10 day quarantine on arrival so it will stay just a fantasy for now...
The areas where people are baptised popped up when I was looking for trips. I think I would prefer Eilat, but Tel Aviv has direct flights...
Maybe some other time :)

Hello Ike,
Thanks for this post. We were scheduled to visit this site on our Israel trip, but were not permitted because of the Pope's pending visit. Now I can see what we missed.
Regards,
