Solidarity, a photo from Ankara, Central Anatolia

Photographer's Note

These 78 days lived in jerry-built tents on streets, told a lot to workers on solidarity basis. They lost a friend, Hamdullah Uysal-Samsun Tekel worker- in this period. Public spirit among tents grew from day to day.

After decleration of the State Council that the 30 days period given to workers to accept 4C or not, is no longer valid, the trade unions decided to abate the tents city they have built in Tuna Caddesi- Sakarya

Social tension was raised and workers did not want to end this struggle with a police intervention.

Trade Unions announced the date 1st of April for the great meeting date. Tekel workers will be back, with collected hopes for gaining their previous employee rights.

At first i wondered about the darkness of this image and wanted to see a little more light in their faces but having read your note my contextual appreciation of the image has changed - it illustrates the mood and the story well the composition is strong. It is so good to see a documentary photograph which is so real and connected with the social reality of people's lives here on TE.

Interesting faces with strong expressions. A manifestation of brotherhood, perhaps. Well composed with the blurred, cut off face on the side in the foreground.

I found a total acceptation of that image in myself.. feel that all I experience here is the truth from the very beginning to the very end.. realistic PP underlines a documentary aspect, in the same time there is sth unusually tender here, as those two guys hug each other in sorrow..

looking in here i see interest on many levels
be it the middle ground focus or the excellent DOF
maybe even the expression of life etched on their faces
all in all a superb shot
though i find it one among many you have taken of such high quality
excellent choice for b&w
