Rideau Rush Hour
Back to Ottawa. I visited the city in 2015, for the first time, but only for a very short amount of time, so this year we spent some more time in the capital city of Canada. Seen here are the Rideau Canal and Parliament Hill in the very heart of the city, which both have featured in two of my previous uploads. It was a wonderful summer day, which meant rush hour in the locks near the place where the canal mouths at the Ottawa River.
Opened in 1832, the Rideau Canal connects the city of Kingston at Lake Ontario to the Ottawa River. It is 202 kilometres in length and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. Parliament Hill (French: Colline du Parlement) houses the Canadian Parliamentary Complex, which contains the House of Commons and the Senate. It was built between 1916 and 1927 after the original building had burnt down. The 92m-high clock tower, known as the Peace Tower, has become a Canadian icon.

Hi Lars,
The length of the canal is giving depth to the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the boats. The good luminosity is bringing out the beauty of the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Lars,
You are showing us a unique view when the lock is operating. I like the sense of depth and the green grounds. The group of boats waiting for the water level to adjust is quite a spectacle to the public, it seems.

Nice attraction with the canal and lockers, Lars - I see at least one person with a camera mounted on a tripod, and others show interest around thee.
Good view beyond, and the Chateau on left.
A combined view with DOF and light well managed.
Have a nice new day,
Ike

Hello Lars,
I like the way you have presented this canal, allowing us to appreciate the full expanse of it till the canal mouth to the Ottawa River, which is not often seen in most canal shots. This place looks great to visit, especially in summer !

Hello Lars,
These boats really need to protect their sides. It seems impossible not to lightly crash into your neighbour now and then at this kind of rush hour. It's even worse than Leiden. You certainly got an exciting view from wherever high up you were standing. The Parliament offers a fine view on the hill and near the water I like the many small red details which provide more brightness.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Lars
I like the near square format and high pov. Excellent sharpness and nice repetition of the boats at right. The castle top left provides a centre of interest and focal point. The people add scale and animate the scene. Tfs!

Hello Lars,
looking at the thumbnail I thought that the boats were just moored in an odd way, it's both amazing and stressful that they should move in such conditions. Your picture describes the setting, the lovely day and daily life in a remarkably clear and accurate way. Perspective and depth are superb, motion and colours very enjoyable. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hello Lars,it seems to me that wherever there is a canal and locks, there will always be people watching fascinated at the spectacle.
And here, three abreast!A wide lock.
A good high viewpoint. There is so much to enjoy in your scene.

Hallo Lars,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hi Lars,
lovely composition -the boats are so crowded here in the lock that it does look like a ruch hour indeed. Great idea for the title. I like the several layers of the composition with the imposing architecture on the top of the hill and the busy street next to the channel.
Fantastic POV very well used,
M

Hello Lars,
I have had a lot of your interesting photographs to browse over and it was difficult to decide which to critique, however, I love how this shows the relationship between the canal and the city, something I had not imagined before.
You are right about rush-hour, the boats are cheek-to-jowl in the canal.
It's a well exposed photograph, crisp and demonstrating natural colours. I like how you have composed the shot using the converging lines for linear perspective, with lots of accessible details either side.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
