Photographer's Note
As a follow-up to my last Canoe run of 2003, I was determined to get in my first paddle of 2004 before winter returns with a vengeance tonight with forecasted -15 temperatures.
So this morning I broke through some thin ice and paddled up this local creek but the main river was already clogging up with ice chunks.
Today's paddle was history-making for our climate area...never before have our rivers been open on the first of the new year.
This will likely be the last of the open water after tonight's freeze-up....the next canoe outing will come with the April break-up of the frozen rivers.
I was debating whether to crop out the front of the canoe....what do you think ?

Vivid colors! I like the framing that let us view only the front of the boat. Well seen! Nice image with contrasting colors (i like the contrast of the deep blue of the water and thewhite snow). (points tomorrow).

I'm glad you didn't crop the front of the canoe, because it gives more strenght to your note and to your photo. Canoeing on the 1st of January in Pont-Rouge isn't something we'll see often. As usual, your photo is very neat, well balanced, well sharpened and well detailled. Thanks for sharing and keep on posting...
I went in Pont-Rouge last night on a call for "Operation Nez rouge", I'll problably share some shots of that event soon!

Don't crop it Derek. This picture is not only an image. It tells a story, and the canoe is part of it.
Technically, I share Isabelle and Daniel's opinions: beautiful photo.

Happy new year Derek. I wish you a lot of good pics in the future too.
Although the river will be frozen, I am sure that you make other beautifulst pics like this one.

Another vote to keep the canoe from me - I think this one will be unanimous. Nice colours and composition, but more importantly another illustration of the unusual climate in your region this year.

Nice landscape, and of course the boat should be included as it really makes this special. Well done Derek

No, you should not cut because the end of the boat concretizes the dream of each to be there where you are, in accordance with the nature. Very beautiful colours.
Non, il ne faut pas couper car le bout du canot concrétise le rêve de chacun de se trouver là où vous êtes, en harmonie avec la nature. Très belles couleurs.

Really pleasing scenery made even more beautiful by your great capture. Your composition is unique but I would prefer a thinner border. Good shot, cool colors.

No, leave the canoe in. I think it really adds to the composition of this shot. I like winter shot with runnig water.
I dont think that today you could do this with our minus 30....
