Photographer's Note
SELMA is one of those place where you can just say "take me to the bridge!" and they know what you mean.
"People get ready
For the train to Jordan
Picking up passengers
From coast to coast
Faith is the key
Open the doors and board them
There's room for all
Among the loved and lost"

SELMA TO MONTGOMERY
The Selma to Montgomery marches were three protest marches held in 1965. The first march resulted in "Bloody Sunday", as state troopers and county possemen attacked the unarmed marchers when they passed the county line, which happend right here on the now famous Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma.
The second march included many sympathizers from the rest of the country. Troopers, police, and marchers confronted each other, but when the troopers stepped aside to let them pass, Martin Luther King led the marchers back to the church.
The violence of Bloody Sunday and the killing of James Reeb (in the aftermath of the second march) resulted in a national outcry and lead to a third march, which lead all the way to the Alabama State Capitol.
With Alabama Governor Wallace refusing to protect the marchers, President Johnson committed to do so.
Eventually 25,000 people entered the capital city in support of voting rights. They contributed to passage that year of the Voting Rights Act, a landmark federal achievement of the Civil Rights Movement.

THIS PICTURE shows the famous Edmund Pettus bridge. It was shot through the car window, entering Selma. We thought it was a must-stop on our tour of the South, sadly the local civil rights museum was closed.

Dag Benny,
Selma zegt mij niet onmiddellijk iets in Amerika.
Maar uw foto leer mij iets dat ik nog niet kende.
Goed perspectief en diepte foto.
Mooi foto werk, bedankt.
Groeten uit Oost-Vlaanderen,

Hello Benny,
I did it in reverse. I got a bus from Jordan to Israel and back. A marvellous blue sky and the bridge makes a fine focal point. Good sharpness & perspective. Tfs!
