Canopy of Blossoms
The Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the most popular and most beautiful attractions in the Washington, D.C. This year approximately one million people came to see the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin during the first two weeks in April.
Tokyo gave Washington approximately 3,000 cherry trees in the early 1900s to beautify the city and recognize a growing friendship between the two cities, countries, and cultures. In 1965, Tokyo gave an additional 3,800 trees. And in 1981, the Japanese brought the friendship full circle by taking clippings from our cherry trees to return to Japan after floods destroyed many of their trees.
In 1912, a shipment of cherry trees arrived in Seattle, Washington rather than Washington D.C. When the trees finally arrived in D. C., horticulturists noticed their roots had been severely pruned for shipment causing a possible threat to their survival. To save the trees, their branches and trunks were “topped” pruned. As the trees were further inspected, they were found to be infested with insects and disease. The U.S. apologized to Japan and ordered that the trees be burned. The cherry trees along with their wrappings and packing were set on fire.
Soon after the original cherry trees were burned, a second shipment arrived from Japan becoming the foundation of the trees today.
The Cherry Blossom Trees are tended by the National Park Service Arborists. Each of the more than 3,700 trees receives individual attention based on its needs.
Between 2002 and 2006, four hundred trees propagated from the 1912 donation, were planted to ensure that the genetic lineage of the original trees is continued.
I recommend Bulent Atalay’s (batalay) Spring Has Sprung I and Spring Has Sprung II for the historical origins of Washington’s cherry trees.

Hello Betty,
How fortunate to have just logged onto Trekearth, when this magical photograph rolled in. It is a classc view of the Washington Monument, framed by the cherry blossoms, but also an ephemeral view. I like the inclusion of the Old Post Office Tower just to the side of the Monument. Your note is first rate, highly informative as usual.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hello Betty,
a carefully composed photo with good lights and colours. (OK, the weather could always be better with deep blue sky and nice clouds but we must not be voracious.) I appreciate that the monument and its reflection is shown in full length, decorated but not hidden by the blossoms. The note is interesting and informative as usual in your gallery.
Compliments

hi Betty
Thank you for visiting my gallery and I am glad you did because here I am, looking at this delightful sakura of DC in this well done shot of the water reflection for this double of sakura and monument. Good work.
Of course even if your note did not mention about Bulent's posts, your photo reminds me of his earlier work. Your version is nicely done too.

Hello Betty,
Well composed and very fresh photograph!
I think that cherry blossoms that is dripping to Potomac river have put out good atmosphere as well as the reflection of Washington Monument and delicate small surf with thin blue color layer of the river.
And, it's good about soft and elegant color tone.
I'm looking at this photograph in special feelings.
I want to visit Washington D.C. where cherry blossoms bloom once while I'm alive.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi, Betty. The cherry blossoms frame the Washington Monument very nicely. The row of trees on the left bank makes a very good diagonal line pointing to the Monument. The contrast and colours are very good and there is a nice reflection of the building on the water surface.
Have a nice week-end,
Philippe

Bonjour Betty
le choix du format vertical est le meilleur pour donner de l'élan à cette colonne. Elles est un peu centrée et je trouve qua le feuillages même si il est aux couleurs du printemps, cache un peu l'arrière-plan.
Amicalement.
Daniel.

Hi, Betty,
I'm glad to have a chance to become acquainted with your gallery. You do wonderful work and I'm sure I can learn a lot from studying it!
This photo exemplifies some elements I see in your other images. Strong subject. Clean composition. Technically flawless. In a way, the Washington Monument is a microcosm of the larger image. What could be more elegant than the simple geometric shape of this obelisk, with almost perfectly monochromatic faces?
The gentle pink color of the cherry blossoms, both foreground and in the distance, and the soft, almost still surface of the water add to the overall effect.
Great work!
