Photographer's Note
Bisons and Buffalos
In the many positive reactions to my previous photo of the interior of the library in Calgary, many also mentioned the presence of the literate bison as an interesting object in the picture.
So time for a few real bisons that we met a few days earlier in Yellowstone Park.
On the way back from our visit to the Mud Volcano, we had a few wonderful opportunities to meet these colossi from nearby.
◄ The Main Photo ► was made at a distance of approximately 40 meters. A bison who had separated himself from the herd stood on a bare piece of land. Suddenly he started to rant wildly with his hind legs as if he wanted to throw a cowboy or Indian from his back. The bison disappeared almost completely in a mist of sand and dust. I was able to capture this event in a series of 40 photos from our car.
◄ The Second Photo ► shows a bison at distance of a meter or two. This buffalo was close to the road and as we passed him I was able to photograph him in close up. After we had passed him I had to close the window quickly because he was heading my way with his head. A photo of this moment can be found in my Facebook report
.
◄The Third Photo ► finally shows the peaceful grazing herd.
Buffalo’s are in principle no danger to humans, but it is wise to keep a sufficient distance. If you are too close they can react unpredictably and you can be gored by one of them like a girl had happened a week earlier.
The best way to view the pictures is to use the links above.

I love the lighting mixed dust effects here. You can feel the animals power. Saw many of these at Yellowstone - quite up-close, but never this active. Great clarity, placement composition, and color levels. Very nice work. drt100 David

Hallo Rob,

Hello Rob,
This is fantastic, really more exciting than any architecture or painting. It's not just the excitement of being so close to such a large wild animal, but you were lucky to have such a combination of physical strength, movement, dust, light and shadows. This is a natural work of art composing itself and you managed to capture it in a perfect photo. Both WS are beautiful to watch, although less exciting. Just for once I was sorry for not being on Facebook. ;-)
Have a nice weekend,
Gert

Hello Rob,
This is another excellent series!
The main shot has real life and intimated movement, the dust, or steam giving an mystical impression.
The details of the bison are amazing. It feels as if we can touch the soft coat!
And then, we have the drama, from your FB page. I can imagine your heart racing a little!
I listened to a very interesting programme on radio about Buffalo Bill. Do you think he would have had the same impact as Bison Bill!
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Rob, i prefer your photo number 2 instead of the main photo where one can t see the animal clearly. The male bison is hidden by the dust, its silouhette is impressive. I m happy to learn the bison population in the Us is going to be recreated partially thanks to the efforts to preserve that majestic species. The European pionners exterminated not only the Natives but also the bisons when they arrived in the far west with the roads and the railroads. It was a tragedy, the species was close to extinction during the 19th century. A hunter like Buffalo Bill alone killed a good ten or so thousands bisons in his entire life. Yellowstone is the oldest national park of the world created in 1872, you were lucky to had visited it.

Hello Rob,
What a great series of photos. The main photo is dramatic, and it makes me wonder what that bison was so angry about! Maybe he had an itch he couldn't scratch. :-) I like the details of the animal in the first WS photo, and the second one is a beautiful combination of landscape and animals.

Hi Rob
love the WS 2, its not everyday we get to see such a large beast like that so upclose and being able to see its ribs, so many details. To be 100% honest, i have my conflicting ideas about these places. It's fun to see the animals so close, but its also VERY VERY dangerous - and I do some pretty stupid dangerous things! So for me to say that, it has to be quite risky. I've heard of people, even seen videos, of people getting eaten alive by lions in these same circumstances. I know that's extreme, but more common is having the animal charge the vehicle and ramming it, causing so much damage. Makes me wonder if we should just leave the animals all alone and give them their peace. anyways, it doesn't take anything away from the photos :) I'm sure it was a cool experience! cheers

Dag Rob,
Schitterende atmosfeer foto. Bedankt
Groeten uit een zon overgoten Vlaanderen,

Hallo Rob,
I did see a real buffalo somewhere in North America (forget exactly where) and they are much bigger than I had imagined. Same applies to the European bison I saw, which was happily munching leaves in Skansen, Stockholm. Tfs!

Hi Rob,
I expected to see an art installation with a shape of a bison here :)
What a surprise to see an actual bison!
Great series of photos!
You should not have been afraid, maybe he just wanted to check if he looked good on the photograph which you have taken of him!
Wonderful wild life series!

Dag Rob I wonder about the beast's hustle and bustle: Is it in direct contact with the fumes of hell in Yellowstone or is it taking itself for a star in the dust of an american cowboy shooting?! Anyway your action capture is outstanding! Velle groeten.

This picture shows how powerful the bison is, a wild animal for sure, Rob.
A dust raised made a very dynamic image outcome.
The WS's also attractive nature sceneries.
Have a nice weekend,
