Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
Yes, this is New York!
On Google Maps, I have located the spot, on West Street; maybe Brenda will be able to explain the exact spot.
We walked along the banks of the Hudson River from the Financial District, in the direction of Soho.
I can only imagine that this was once a wharf, where ships would have docked to unload or load cargoes. Now it is just a skeleton of what was once there but it made an interesting feature for my photograph.
I wonder, is that Jersey City across the river!
Have a lovely Sunday and keep safe, Bev :-)

Hi Bev,
Those old poles make strong perspective and reach quite far to the river. Poles are clearly rotting away, and that makes them more picturesque. Background buildings are massive, but architecture does not look very interesting.

Hi Bev,
The distance beyween the pieces of wood and the buildings is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the remains of the pier and of the buildings in the background. The light is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Lovely view, dear Bev. The contrast between old and new, near and far. I just love the history behind this kind of place. Thanks for posting it.

Hello Bev,
We get a nice wide panorama view with the old poles exactly to stop ships, but it must have been a pier
But a nice picture with pleasant colours, and big city in background.
Nice presentation and lovely of sharpness.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a lovely Sunday and keep safe too,
John

Hello Beverley,
Similar poles can be seen on different places around Manhattan and even in Brooklyn. In this photo the poles look already very weathered.
It made me very curious why they have been preserved in that state.
I've taken a similar walk and have similar photos (not shown yet) but as I said there were multiple places like this one.
West Street is a very, very long avenue. If you were already close to Soho, it will likely be Jersey City we see across the Hudson. If you hiked a lot further north, it could also be Hoboken. I suspect Brenda can identify the exact location.
It is an excellent photo with an imaginative foreground which made NYC a bit more mysterious for me now and then.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Bev,
I managed to find this place too on Google Maps, but it looks much nicer in this 10 year old photo than in the much more recent Google photos. There are fewer wooden poles now and most of them look much smaller. The map location is 40.731411 -74.011112 and the area exactly opposite seems to be the Jersey City district of Newport. This is a very good composition, well balanced on 1/3, and the poles make me think of a huge artistic installation.
Kind regards,
Gert

an unusual view of new york, haha. curious visual effect with these poles in the water showing the lost structure once was there. another strange fact is that sign in red in one of them. nice view, surprising.
here the winds are coming from sea, something cold for this part of the year..the rain we need is only a sample. covid in increasing and people don't mind..
take care

Hello Beverley,
I must have walked there too, although I can't remember seeing this place in person. The many old wooden poles make a great pattern as they stand out so well from the water. The modern tower of Jersey City make a wonderful backdrop.

Dear Beverley,
Yes maybe, they are just skeletons now, but they provide an excellent photo-opportunity. I really like this result! Its a photo I would have taken it proudly.
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hello Beverley, this is a fabulous shot, I am surprised that it has been filed away for so long!
I love the composition with the rotting pieces of wood, suggesting as you say in the title, 'a skeleton!'
There is a sharp contrast with the wooden pieces and the modern skyscrapers in the background.
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Hello Bev,
It seems like other very knowledgeable TE members have already confirmed that Jersey City is, in fact, across the Hudson River in this view. :-) These old, wooden stumps always make me think of the great ships that used to sail into the many west side slips years ago. Where did your ship dock? Some dock in Brooklyn now. It's a lovely view. Stay safe and take care!

Hi Bev
Old piles are great photography subjects and especially when you get a background like in this good photo.

Hi Bev
In one picture the old and new city of Naw York. The roting wooden poles should have sustained the wharfs many years ago, it's strange that they have not been demolished to be replaced by a concrete quay.
Cheers

Hi Bev,
It appears you were just a few decades too late to capture this former pier in its prime. No problem as this contemporary view is more interesting and photogenic. Tfs!

Hello Bev,
I remember well these pole heads on the west side of Manhattan.
Several responses show that this is a place where a TE meeting could have been held.
Only then should we have made sure that we had agreed here at the same time.
But for now, that's not the case because travel to the U.S. isn't possible, but if Trump will be re-elected (let's hope for not) he'll declare America covid-free in one fell swoop.
Excellent work
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hi Bev.
A sensational image of N.Y. very novel that I had never seen before, very curious the effect of all these logs, with the coastline in the background and its tall buildings, which indeed I think corresponds to Jersey City.
Sharpness, lighting, color and magnificent composition; all are perfectly realized factors.
Well done. I like.
Have a nice day.
Most sincere regards.
Luis.

Hi Beverley
Wonderful point of view of an iconic image in the grand scale of things. Those wooden stakes in the water seem to echo the skyscrapers. Excellent composition, Congrats

Beverley, the numerous wooden posts give an idea of the size of the pier that existed here in the past. These pillars are rotten nowadays. Nice view of the Hudson river and the skyscrapers in the background. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hi Beverley.
Unfortunately, I don't have answer to your questions for, I have never been to NY except for a two hour JFK airport transfer en route to Bogota many years ago.
Nevertheless, this is a beautiful, seldom seen panorama scene from the mega city.
Of course, the remaining poles from the wharf in the water give the frame eye catching attraction at first sight. Photograph was taken at the right time of the day, I like the natural subtle light. Well done, TFS!!!

Hi Bev,
very eye catching composition, I like the pattern in the foreground. It feels rough and damaged but that makes it even more photogenic. It contrasts nicely with the modern view in the distance. There seem to be so many beautiful places to walk around in NYC. And it is constantly evolving.
Very well done,
M
