Photographer's Note

Island in the Sky is the Canyonlands National Park, Utah's rim drive and most popular in the Park. Numerous 'Kodak Moments' are within the area, and it is across the street (highway) from Arches National Park (actually a dozen miles or so, but why quibble when there's two National Parks so close?).

This image has the Schafer Trail dirt road in the foreground. Cattlemen Frank and John Schafer built the trail in the early 1900s to move their cattle around. In the 1950s the Trail was improved by uranimum mining companies.

The trail can be driven in a high clearance 2 wheel drive auto, but go slow and cautiously. The road starts along a steep slope and meanders downwards to the Colorado River and eventually ends at Highway 191 just north of Moab. Moab is a good base camp for exploring with motels and restaurants.

The bonus on the road is a slender long arch extending out over the canyon. I walked across it once but vertigo kept me from attempting a second stroll.
