Photographer's Note

The Queen Mary 2 sailed into Sydney Harbour this morning, as part of her 揂round the World in 80 Days tour. It is the world抯 largest ocean liner, and biggest ship to have ever visited Australia, (have a look at the buses on the right for perspective). It is reported to weigh 151,400 tons. It is so big it could not dock at the Overseas Passenger Terminal where most cruise ships go and would not fit under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Instead it had to tie up at Woolloomooloo Bay, shown here. The Overseas Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay will be reserved for its sister ship, the Queen Elizabeth 2, that arrives tonight. More history will be made then. It will be the first time since the second world war that two Cunard Queens have been in the Sydney Harbour together, when the original Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth visited the city as troop carriers.

The dual visit by the iconic liners will generate a $3 million tourism bonanza for Sydney, delivering about 6,500 passengers and crew to the city, the equivalent of 19 jumbo loads of tourists, says a spokesman for Cunard Line.

Workflow for this shot included:
Shot was taken in Raw the light on the right and overhead was very harsh leading to some nasty shadows on the left
The NEF file shadows and highlights were adjusted
Levels were adjusted for black points ( I was on the edge for white)
Separate curves were adjusted for RGB and colour (mostly for shadows)
After the curves I needed to bring some more contrast back in with a brightness / contrast layer
An overlay layer was used with an opacity 5 brush to further darken some of the highlights and lighten some of the shadows.
The file was cropped and saved as a Tiff
For this posting the file was sharpened using smart sharpened and saved as a JPEG.
