Photographer's Note

Smooth mountains and volcanos all around and the raging whistle of the wind. I'm at 4345mt and I'm trying to write my diary on a black stones mountains spotted by some yellow bushes.

At my feet one of the wonders of a visit in Bolivia: the Laguna Colorada, for me one of the wildest and amazing places in the world. Hundreds of flamingos criss cross the unbelievable coloured waters in search of food. The temperature is well below the zero but are the strong gusts of wind that bother.
Can't write anymore my hands are frozen. Brrrr...

Laguna Colorada is situated in the south west of Bolivia not far from the border with Chile. To arrive here the route passes through spectacular landscapes with multicoloured volcanic rock formations, and reaches a height of 5000 metres.

The rich red colouration is derived from algae and plankton, which thrive in its minerals, and the shoreline is fringed with brilliant white deposits of sodium, magnesium, borax and gypsum. The lagoon is inhabited by numerous flamingos.
