Photographer's Note

Right after unboarding in Marajó, the visitor will notice bulls all around. The animal is the symbol of the island. It is estimated that the population of bulls is three times bigger than inhabitants. The number of bulls is around 600 thousand distributed throughout the 13 municipalities of Marajó. There are a lot of versions about the arrival of the animal to the island. One of them tells that a rich farmer imported it from the south of Italy in the end of the 19th century. Another story ensures that a boat full of bulls, on its way to the French Guyana, sinked near the archipelagus, having some of the animals survived after swimming until the island. A last story tells that they were brought by franciscan missioners in the 18th century.

The bulls are found all around the island, inside and outside of the cities. The animals are extremely important to the local economy. Besides providing raw material to the leather factories, they are used as traction power in the farms and in the city, where they pull the municipal garbage trucks, and are used even as police mount. If the size and the face of the animal scare, a lot of them are trained to interact with the tourists.

The bulls are tame animals, obedients and stronger than equines and bovines. Used to work on the mud, they are excellent traction animals. It is a resistent animal and with only two years produces twice as much as an adult horse in hard work. When the humidity is low or when the sun shines strong, the bulls need water, for they have few sebacious glands. Cooling down the body in the mud constantly is essencial to the animal.
